New Resident Evil Film on the Horizon
Sony Pictures is developing a new Resident Evil film, under the creative direction of Zach Cregger, known for his work on “Barbarian” and “Weapons.” While the casting for the film remains unconfirmed, a notable actor has shown interest in the role of Albert Wesker.
The artist known as BossLogic recently shared a manipulated image of actor Antony Starr, portraying him as Albert Wesker from the Resident Evil series. BossLogic captioned the image with a direct appeal to the film’s decision-makers, urging, “Whoever is in charge of the new Resident Evil movie. Do it……”
Starr himself chimed in on the post, expressing his enthusiasm with a playful response, “I agree .”
Potential Casting and Film Details
While it’s unclear if Antony Starr’s comment was serious, his portrayal of the villainous Homelander in “The Boys” suggests he could be well-suited for a character as dark as Wesker. However, it remains to be seen whether Wesker will even be a character in the upcoming film.
Previously, Paul W.S. Anderson directed a series of Resident Evil films that grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. This new project, however, is expected to take a different direction. Already confirmed for the cast are Austin Abrams in a leading role and Mikey Madison, who has received an Oscar, is rumored to be involved. Production is anticipated to start later this year.
Zach Cregger’s latest project, “Weapons,” featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, is slated for release this August. His film “Barbarian,” which came out in 2022, was well-received and significantly boosted his profile in the industry. Cregger, who first gained fame with the comedy group The Whitest Kids U’Know, has reportedly secured a $20 million deal to write and direct the new Resident Evil movie for Sony.
The release of the new Resident Evil movie is scheduled for September 2026. It will be one of several video game adaptations hitting theaters that year, including Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2,” possibly renamed to “Super Mario World,” set for release in April 2026.
This upcoming installment in the Resident Evil franchise promises a fresh perspective from Cregger, who continues to expand his repertoire beyond his comedic beginnings into more varied cinematic endeavors.
