In 2023, an intended live-action adaptation of the Powerpuff Girls as adults was discontinued at The CW after facing multiple challenges. Recently, a teaser clip emerged online, offering a glimpse into what the series could have potentially been, and the content certainly raises eyebrows.
Released earlier today on “Lost Media Busters,” a YouTube channel, the video was quickly removed due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment. The nearly four-minute-long trailer reveals the adult lives of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup who have moved away from home. In this new phase of their lives, Blossom, portrayed by Chloe Bennet, is depicted as overwhelmed and exhausted, Bubbles, played by Dove Cameron, has turned to alcohol, and Buttercup, characterized by Yana Perrault, is shown as a defiant figure challenging societal gender norms.
The trailer unfolds with the trio accidentally causing the death of a character named Mojo and subsequently fleeing Townsville. They return years later to visit their father, Professor Utonium, played by Donald Faison. Upon their return, they face Mojo’s son, Jojo, now the mayor of Townsville, who has brainwashed the town’s people and is bent on avenging his father’s death. The trailer features sharp humor, with Bubbles joking about juggalos and Buttercup making a provocative comment about Jojo’s vendetta against Blossom.
CW confirmed to Variety that the leaked footage was authentic but clarified that it was never meant for public release.

The project of a live-action Powerpuff Girls series was first announced in 2020, but it was ultimately canceled in 2023 after encountering several obstacles, including an unsuccessful initial pilot and the exit of Chloe Bennet from the project.
CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz commented on the canceled pilot, stating, “The purpose of creating pilot episodes is to identify what works and what doesn’t, and this pilot unfortunately missed the mark. We had full confidence in the cast and the creative team, including writers Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, and the production support from Greg Berlanti and Warner studios. However, the pilot did not deliver as expected. It appeared overly campy and not as grounded in reality as we hoped. Pilots are often about learning and experimenting, and in this instance, we decided it was best to go back to the drawing board after realizing the existing elements were not aligning as we intended.”
