Announcing the Nominees for the 10th Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards
The Critics Choice Association has unveiled the nominees for this year’s Critics Choice Documentary Awards, which celebrate the most exceptional documentary filmmaking from the past year.
This year, the film “Orwell: 2+2=5” leads the nominations, securing seven categories including Best Documentary Feature, Best Director for Raoul Peck, Best Editing, Best Score, Best Narration by Damian Lewis, Best Archival Documentary, and Best Political Documentary.
Following closely is Netflix’s “The Perfect Neighbor,” which garnered six nominations after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Its nominations include Best Documentary Feature and Best True Crime Documentary.
Event Details and Highlights
The award winners will be announced during a ceremony on November 9 at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. The event will be hosted by actor, writer, and producer Aasif Mandvi and is produced by Bob Bain from Bob Bain Productions along with Joey Berlin of Berlin Entertainment. National Geographic Documentary Films is the main sponsor for the event.
Nominations are selected by CCA members who are experts in documentary films. Last year, the films “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” and “Will and Harper” both received the accolade for Best Documentary Feature.
“This year’s nominated documentaries highlight the power of storytelling in uncovering truths, evoking empathy, and enhancing our understanding of the world,” stated Christopher Campbell, vice president of documentaries at the Critics Choice Association. He expressed enthusiasm for acknowledging the filmmakers who continue to push the boundaries of documentary filmmaking.
In a special recognition, the Critics Choice Impact Award will be presented to the illustrious documentarian Ken Burns for his significant contributions to documentary cinema, with Christine Baranski presenting the award. Additionally, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady will be honored with the CCA’s Pennebaker Award, which was previously known as the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented by Chris Hegedus, the widow and collaborator of D.A. Pennebaker.
