Nintendo is revitalizing Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a new edition tailored for Switch 2 and a complimentary update for the original version. Both are set to release on January 15, 2026, with preorders opening soon, according to Nintendo.
The Switch 2 version introduces several advancements such as enhanced resolution graphics (limited to 30fps), the option to use mouse controls, a built-in microphone-enabled megaphone for in-game use, support for online gaming with up to 12 participants, and CameraPlay feature.
The free update to the original game will include a new resort hotel managed by Kapp’n’s family, new themed merchandise and characters, additional exclusive content like Slumber Island for Nintendo Switch Online members, among others. This update will be accessible in both the original and new editions of the game starting January 15.

Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be available in both digital and physical formats upon its launch on January 15 for $64.99. For those who already own the game on Nintendo Switch, a paid upgrade is also being offered for $4.99. Preorders for this upgrade are now available via the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop.

- Mouse controls using the right Joy-Con 2 controller for indoor decoration, creating Custom Designs, and composing handwritten messages on the bulletin board.
- Use the in-game megaphone item and the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in microphone to locate residents by calling out their names.
- Participate in online sessions with up to 12 players, exclusive to those using the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
- Experience CameraPlay by connecting a compatible USB camera (sold separately) to see friends’ reactions in real-time as you explore the island together.
New Features for Both Versions:
- Resort Hotel’s Grand Opening: A newly opened resort hotel on the pier is managed by Kapp’n’s family. Help attract guests by decorating rooms and more. Discover new furniture and clothing at the souvenir shop and dress mannequins in outfits for guests.
- Making Island Life More Convenient: Resetti offers a new Reset Service to help clean up your island. Upgrade your home storage to accommodate up to 9,000 items, including storage for trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Slumber Island: For Nintendo Switch Online members, design and save up to three islands, play with friends, select the layout, collaboratively build and design, access your inventory, decorate, and invite residents from your home island.
- Collaborations: Collect in-game Nintendo items like the Ultra Hand and classic Nintendo consoles. Nintendo Switch Online members can enjoy select classic Nintendo games in-game by interacting with these console items. This update also introduces LEGO items and enables the use of select The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series amiibo to invite specific characters and unlock themed items.
