The latest Mortal Kombat II trailer ends with a teaser showing Scorpion facing off against Noob Saibot, who was formerly Sub-Zero, or Bi-Han. Joe Taslim portrayed Bi-Han, who met his demise at the hands of Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, in the 2021 movie reboot. Though Bi-Han was defeated, fans of Mortal Kombat weren’t convinced it was the last they’d see of him, particularly since Taslim had disclosed his contract covered multiple films.
With Karl Urban stepping into the spotlight as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II, questions arise about the extent of the Scorpion-Noob Saibot storyline within the film, especially given Hiroyuki Sanada’s escalated fame and accolades since the first movie, including his notable success in Shogun.
Director Simon McQuoid emphasized Scorpion’s critical role in the film during our interview, stating, “He is central to the narrative, but it’s about more than just one character. We aimed to give each character a meaningful arc, starting them off in one scenario and guiding them to another by the film’s conclusion. Hiro, reprising his role as Scorpion, truly excels, contributing to some thrilling scenes with Noob that I believe will deeply satisfy the fans waiting for their epic showdown.”
Producer Garner mentioned the balancing act of utilizing Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion, constrained by the actor’s demanding schedule: “We would have loved to feature him more extensively, but his career is vast. He’s a legend. Thus, we respected the significance of his role, striving to maximize his impact within the storyline, which revolves predominantly around Johnny Cage’s journey.”
Garner added, “Filmmaking is bound by the realities of physics, actor availability, and other practical considerations. We can’t always get everything exactly as desired due to these constraints.”
Apart from Johnny Cage, Kitana and Jade, played by Adeline Rudolph and Tati Gabrielle respectively, also make their first appearance in the reboot series. McQuoid shared, “Kitana, portrayed as the daughter of Shao Kahn and Sindel, has her own unique story that we explore from the beginning. Jade brings a fresh dynamic and aesthetic to the film, enhancing the overall atmosphere with her presence.”
McQuoid further noted, “Their inclusion not only adds a new layer of intrigue but also respects and complements the journeys of the existing characters, ensuring a well-balanced and engaging narrative.”
Regarding a potential setup for another sequel, Garner clarified, “This film doesn’t automatically set up a sequel. We operate under the principle that we must earn our continuation. While there is a hint towards future possibilities, nothing is guaranteed. We focus on delivering a complete story that, if supported by the audience, could potentially lead to more installments.”
