Matthew McConaughey Sets ‘True Detective’ Reunion With Nic Pizzolatto on ‘Mike Hammer’ Movie, Based on Book Series

Matthew McConaughey and Nic Pizzolatto are joining forces once again for a new detective movie. McConaughey is currently negotiating to lead a Skydance-produced film, portraying the legendary detective Mike Hammer. Nic Pizzolatto is set to write the screenplay.

This project marks a reunion for McConaughey and Pizzolatto, who previously collaborated on Pizzolatto’s HBO series "True Detective." McConaughey starred in the acclaimed first season of the show in 2014 alongside Woody Harrelson.

Skydance has secured the rights to the “Mike Hammer” series, originally created by Mickey Spillane and later continued by Max Allan Collins. The plan is to adapt this popular book series into a movie. The production team for this film includes Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, as well as Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady. Benjamin Forkner and Ken F. Levin will also serve as producers. Max Allan Collins will take on the role of executive producer, with Jane Spillane as co-producer. Carin Sage will be supervising the project for Skydance.

McConaughey took a break from acting for six years, recently returning to the big screen in “The Rivals of Amziah King.” His upcoming projects include starring opposite America Ferrera in an Apple TV+ disaster thriller titled “The Lost Bus.” Earlier this year, McConaughey expressed to The Bangin Beats his need for creative control over his projects, stating, “I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page.”

Nic Pizzolatto, an accomplished novelist, screenwriter, producer, and director, is best known for creating and leading the first three seasons of "True Detective" on HBO. His books have been translated into over 30 languages, and he has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, winning two Writers Guild Awards. His recent endeavors include directing his first film "Easy’s Waltz," working on several projects for Skydance, and developing a new television series with Netflix.

Pizzolatto’s representation includes WME, Gillett Management, and Eric Brooks of Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher.

The news of this new project was first reported by Deadline.
