Magic: The Gathering Goes Super Sonic With New Secret Lair Collab

New Horizons for Sonic in Magic: The Gathering

Step aside Cloud, Tifa, and Kefka; it’s time for Sonic the Hedgehog and his gang to race into the realm of Magic: The Gathering through an exciting new partnership. In contrast with the recent Final Fantasy releases, Sonic will be featured in not one, but three exclusive Secret Lair drops. For those unfamiliar, Secret Lair represents a collection of limited-time offerings from Magic, showcasing a select grouping of cards adorned with unique artwork.

“This collection includes seven fresh designs that vividly portray the characters from Sonic the Hedgehog,” according to the official announcement (as reported by Variety). “Wizards of the Coast have commissioned new artwork for these cards, some of which are created by beloved artists from the Sonic community, marking their debut in designing for Magic: The Gathering.”

The initial release, known as the Turbo Gear drop, is tailored to appeal to fans of Magic’s beloved Commander format. It features essential items like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves, aptly themed around Sonic’s famous footwear. This drop also includes cards representing Sonic, Super State, Shadow, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, and Knuckles.

Moreover, the iconic airship Weatherlight has been reimagined as Sonic’s Biplane, Tornado. A rule modification now allows players to use this as their Commander, enriching gameplay possibilities.

All three Secret Lair drops will be available both as standard cards for $29.99 and as foil editions for $39.99. They will go on sale at 12 PM ET/9 AM PT on July 14, exclusively through the Secret Lair online shop, directly from Wizards of the Coast. Unlike traditional releases, these cards are sold directly and not in randomized packs, ensuring collectors know exactly what they are purchasing.
