Here Are Three New Cards From The Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy Collaboration

Wizards of the Coast has joined forces with Square Enix to create an exciting new expansion for Magic: The Gathering, centered around the universe of Final Fantasy. This expansion, Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy, draws inspiration from the 16 mainline Final Fantasy games. Within this expansion is a special subset called Final Fantasy: Through The Ages, which is essentially a smaller collection housed within the main set.

Exploring Final Fantasy: Through The Ages

Final Fantasy: Through The Ages brings 64 iconic MTG cards back to life, featuring original artwork sourced from Square Enix’s archives in Japan. The developers sifted through over 5,000 artworks to select images that best represent these cards, assigning four cards to each of the 16 mainline Final Fantasy games. We are privileged to give you an exclusive sneak peek at three of these cards: two from Final Fantasy VIII and one from the latest installment, Final Fantasy XVI.

Launching Details and Card Availability

The Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy expansion is set to hit local game stores and major retail outlets on June 13. The special Through The Ages cards will be randomly inserted in every third Play Booster pack and will also be available in each Collector Booster pack.

Spotlight on New Cards

First, let’s delve into the card from Final Fantasy XVI, named Hugo Kupka. Hugo Kupka is a reimagined version of Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder. This legendary creature, categorized as a Human Ally, requires two generic, one red, and one white mana to cast. It has a power and toughness of 3/3. When Hugo Kupka enters the battlefield or attacks, another target creature you control gains double strike and lifelink until the end of the turn. The card also features the “Partner” ability, allowing players to have two commanders if both possess this trait.

Following that, we reveal a card from Final Fantasy VIII, representing none other than the hero himself, Squall Leonhart. This card is a revamped version of Danitha Capashen, Paragon. Squall Leonhart, a legendary Human Knight, requires two generic and one white mana to cast and has 2 power and 2 toughness. His abilities include first strike, vigilance, and lifelink, and he reduces the casting cost of Aura and Equipment spells by one generic mana. Squall is a valuable asset in tron builds, potentially enhancing your gameplay significantly.

Lastly, we introduce Balamb Garden from Final Fantasy VIII, based on the original Command Beacon card. Balamb Garden functions as a versatile utility land, producing one colorless mana when tapped or allowing you to tap and sacrifice it to return your commander to your hand from the command zone. This ability is particularly useful in Commander games, especially when your commander has accumulated a significant tax, as casting the commander from your hand bypasses this additional cost.

Each of these cards brings a unique blend of Magic: The Gathering mechanics and Final Fantasy lore, sure to excite fans of both franchises.
