Magic The Gathering May Have Weighed In On Final Fantasy 7 Canon

In the popular game Final Fantasy VII, the character Cloud can invite one of his allies for a romantic outing at the Gold Saucer Skywheel. However, the developer Square Enix has never officially disclosed which of Cloud’s companions is the canonical choice for this date. Although it’s revisited in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as a non-canon event, a new development involving a trading card from the Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy crossover might shed some light on this mystery through its artwork.

A Crucial Card from the Magic: The Gathering Crossover

The card at the center of this intrigue is named “Secret Rendezvous.” It is part of the Final Fantasy VII-inspired Commander deck known as Limit Break. “Secret Rendezvous” features an illustration of Cloud on his date at the Skywheel, with four alternate artworks depicting him with Tifa, Yuffie, Aerith, or Barret.

Revealing the Default Choice

Interestingly, the official Magic: The Gathering website reveals that the primary version of the “Secret Rendezvous” card, which is included in the deck, shows Cloud with Tifa. The alternate versions with the other characters are only available in special Collector Booster packs. This might suggest a preference for Tifa as Cloud’s partner, at least from the perspective of the Magic: The Gathering team. This choice could potentially hint at future revelations in the upcoming third installment of the FF7 Remake series, as teased by a new Sephiroth card revealed at PAX East.

Expanding the Fantasy Universe

Final Fantasy VII is just one of four games from the franchise being celebrated in the Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy set. Other games featured with their own themed Commander decks include Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XIV. The main card set encompasses characters and iconic scenes from across all 16 mainline Final Fantasy titles.

The Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy set is scheduled for release on June 13 at local game stores and major retail outlets. Fans of the series and card game enthusiasts alike can look forward to pre-release events starting June 6 at local gaming venues.

This intriguing intersection of Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering not only brings two beloved universes together but also adds a layer of excitement with potential clues to unresolved mysteries in the Final Fantasy narrative. Whether or not these implications are officially recognized or expanded upon in future game releases remains to be seen.
