This Nintendo Mascot's Presence At MagicCon Raised Questions Of A Possible New Collab

The “Universes Beyond” initiative by Magic: The Gathering has paved the way for some unique and unexpected partnerships. A recent incident at MagicCon Atlanta involving a promotional booth for an upcoming Secret Lair featuring Furby led to rumors of another intriguing collaboration. This speculation was sparked when an individual dressed in a Furby costume was seen dancing alongside another person dressed as Kirby.

The incident happened on a Saturday at the convention, where Furby had its own mini dance floor. The dance was joined by someone in a large Kirby costume, and they danced together for about half an hour. Wizards of the Coast clarified to GameSpot that this occurrence was merely coincidental, as the person in the Kirby costume was just a fan who decided to join in on the fun.

Despite the clarification, social media was abuzz with speculation. Posts on Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms featured the dancing duo, leading to discussions about the possibility of Kirby joining the Magic: The Gathering universe. While some fans entertained the idea, others rightly dismissed it as casual convention fun with no deeper implications.

Considering recent trends, the idea of Nintendo exploring a collaboration with Magic: The Gathering isn’t far-fetched. The game has recently included several video game franchises, introducing unique card designs themed after their characters. For example, the Final Fantasy-themed set shattered sales records to become the best-selling MTG set on its first day. Similarly, Secret Lair drops have featured themes from Sonic The Hedgehog, Tomb Raider, and Street Fighter.

In addition, during the MagicCon Atlanta, Wizards of the Coast announced a new partnership with PlayStation. This collaboration will see a PlayStation-themed Secret Lair superdrop on October 27, featuring games like God of War, The Last Of Us Parts I and II, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon: Forbidden West.

This sets a precedent that makes a potential collaboration with Nintendo seem plausible, whether through a new Universes Beyond set or smaller, themed Secret Lair drops.

Other notable announcements from MagicCon included a lineup of expansions planned for release in 2026. These include sets themed around The Hobbit, Star Trek, and Marvel Super Heroes, alongside Secret Lair drops in collaboration with Jaws, The Office, Furby, and others.
