John Travolta Surprises ‘Grease’ Fans and Revives Danny Zuko Live in Person at Hollywood Bowl Song-a-Long

At a recent “Grease” sing-a-long event at the Hollywood Bowl, John Travolta delighted fans by showing up unexpectedly in full Danny Zuko attire, reminiscent of his rebellious 1950s character known for his slick dance moves and racing prowess.

“This evening at the Hollywood Bowl, I decided to surprise everyone at the ‘GREASE’ Sing-A-Long by dressing as Danny Zuko,” Travolta shared in a Saturday Instagram post, which included a video of his surprise appearance. “It was a secret to all, including the cast. Thanks for a wonderful night.”

In the footage, Travolta confidently strode onto the stage clad in his iconic leather outfit, to the roaring applause of the audience gathered at the packed Hollywood Bowl. He then proceeded to surprise his fellow original cast members on stage, who were equally shocked and delighted, before he turned to address the audience.

Engaging with the crowd, Travolta playfully referenced a famous line from the movie saying, “L.A! I thought you were going back to Australia?” He added with a chuckle, “That’s cool, that’s cool, baby. You know, rocking and rolling and whatnot.”

Following a brief countdown, Travolta and his fellow original cast members joined the audience in a spirited rendition of the nostalgic chorus, “a-womp-bop-a-looma a-womp-bam-boom.” He then expressed his appreciation to the audience, saying, “Enjoy the show. We love you!”

On stage with Travolta were notable figures including the film’s director Randal Kleiser, and actors Barry Pearl, Didi Conn, Kelly Ward, and Michael Tucci.

Released in 1978, “Grease” featured Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the lead characters and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Despite a modest budget of $6 million, it soared to become Paramount’s top-grossing film at the time, raking in over $130 million. The ensemble cast also included talents like Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Jamie Donnelly, Dinah Manoff, and Eve Arden. Olivia Newton-John, who starred opposite Travolta, passed away in 2022.
