Ghost of Yotei State of Play July 2025: Everything Revealed

Sony and Sucker Punch Productions have recently concluded their State of Play for July 2025, dedicated to Ghost of Yōtei. This event provided an in-depth look at the game’s environment, combat system, and new features, setting the stage for its upcoming release this autumn.

During the 20-minute gameplay showcase, creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox offered viewers a detailed preview of Atsu’s adventures, which promise a blend of familiar and novel experiences for fans of 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima. This latest State of Play has given us the most comprehensive glimpse yet at what is poised to be one of the PlayStation 5’s standout titles this year.

Exploring the Beauty and Perils of Ezo

In Ghost of Yōtei, players follow Atsu on her relentless quest for vengeance against the Yōtei Six. Her path is marked by bloodshed, earning her a fearsome reputation as a possible reincarnation of a legendary Onyro spirit. The game innovatively integrates flashbacks to Atsu’s childhood at the press of a button, enriching the narrative of her revenge.

Navigating through Ezo offers a stark contrast to the war-ravaged Tsushima. The game’s expansive new map is designed to enhance player freedom, touted by Sucker Punch as more pronounced than in any of their previous games. This freedom is exemplified by the Clue System, which can lead Atsu to diverse locations from snow-covered peaks with hidden foes to villages devastated by fire and besieged by samurai.

The developers encourage players to engage with the game’s elements—combat, exploration, or narrative—as they see fit. A recommended approach to fully appreciate Ezo’s offerings is to simply use a spyglass, spot something intriguing, and head towards it.

Exploration in the 1603 setting of Japan unveils not only familiar activities like Bamboo Strike challenges and Hot Springs but also introduces bounty hunter missions. Additionally, Atsu can access Altars of Reflection which unlock new abilities essential for her journey.

Enhancements to Ghost of Yōtei’s Combat System

Facing a substantial bounty, Atsu can utilize an array of new weaponry. Although traditional swordplay remains central, the inclusion of weapons such as katanas, spears, the kusarigama chain blade, the lengthy odachi, and dual swords each add unique tactical advantages. These weapons also come with upgrade options.

Ranged combat sees Atsu primarily wielding a bow and a gun, the latter offering a quick solution to distant threats at the expense of stealth. Unlike Jin from Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu has no qualms using her additional tools against the Yōtei Six.

Between skirmishes, Atsu can unwind under the stars, where she can cook, play music, and regroup with allies. This relaxation time is enhanced by a new menu system called Atsu’s Wolf Pack, which offers a character-driven approach to managing interactions with allies and vendors.

Where Ghost of Tsushima connected with nature in one way, Ghost of Yōtei aims to deepen this connection. This includes a wolf companion who aids in combat and traversing flower fields on horseback for boosts. The game also introduces advanced customization options for Atsu’s armor and dynamic enemy disarming mechanics.

Return of Kurosawa Mode and New Immersive Features

The beloved Kurosawa Mode, a tribute to legendary director Akira Kurosawa, returns after its success in Ghost of Tsushima, reflecting Sucker Punch’s appreciation for seminal cinematic influences.

New modes include Miike Mode, inspired by director Takashi Miike, which offers a grittier, more visceral visual experience, and Watanabe Mode, drawing from Samurai Champloo’s Shinichirō Watanabe, which pairs exploration and combat with original lo-fi beats.

Other updates include a revamped photo mode and audio options such as Standard English, Subtitled English, and Samurai Cinema, featuring fully voiced Japanese dialogue with English subtitles.

Ghost of Yōtei is set to launch on October 2, 2025, for the PS5. In a surprising last-minute announcement, Sucker Punch revealed that special edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 consoles and unique DualSense controllers will also be available at launch.
