Warner Bros. Discovery Says It Is Officially Considering Buyout Offers Amid ‘Unsolicited Interest From Multiple Parties’

Warner Bros. Discovery has officially announced that it is open to considering purchase proposals, with reported interest coming from Paramount Skydance.

Despite plans to split into two separate entities, Warner Bros. and Discovery, by the middle of 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery is now exploring acquisition opportunities following “unsolicited interest from several entities” in purchasing either the whole company or just the Warner Bros. segment.

On October 21, the company communicated to investors that it had begun evaluating “strategic alternatives to enhance shareholder value.” This includes considering selling the entire company or possibly engaging in separate transactions for its Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global divisions.

David Zaslav, the President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, expressed optimism about the company’s direction, noting significant efforts to adapt to the changing media landscape, restore the studios to prominence, and expand HBO Max worldwide. Zaslav highlighted that their decision to potentially split the company into Warner Bros. and Discovery Global was driven by a belief in this strategy’s effectiveness. He added, “The growing market recognition of our valuable portfolio has led to multiple parties showing interest. Consequently, we are undertaking a thorough exploration of strategic options to fully capitalize on our assets.”

This update follows reports that Paramount Skydance is gearing up to make an offer to acquire the competing studio, aiming to take over the entire Warner Bros. Discovery business.

Warner Bros. Discovery boasts a variety of major media brands and entertainment franchises, including HBO, CNN, and the Harry Potter and DC universes, featuring iconic characters like Superman and Batman. Its recent successes include the blockbuster performance of movies such as DC Studios’ Superman, A Minecraft Movie, and Sinners, with the 2023 release of Barbie grossing over a billion dollars at the box office.

On the television and streaming front, Warner Bros. operates HBO Max, which hosts popular series such as The Penguin, Peacemaker, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and more. The platform is also set to release new shows like IT: Welcome to Derry, and Game of Thrones spinoffs A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon Season 3. The DC TV show Lanterns is expected to premiere on HBO Max next year.

Warner Bros. also manages a substantial video game division with studios like Rocksteady (Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League), TT Games (LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight), NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat), and Avalanche Software (Hogwarts Legacy).

Warner Bros. mentioned that there is no fixed deadline or specific timeline for concluding its review of strategic alternatives, and emphasized that apart from the already planned split, there’s no certainty that this review will lead to any transaction or particular outcome.

The announcement was made concurrently with a price increase across all subscription levels for HBO Max.
