Netflix is currently developing a live-action series based on Dungeons & Dragons, as reported by a recent publication.
According to Deadline, Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool & Wolverine, is collaborating with Drew Crevello, the writer-showrunner of WeCrashed, and Hasbro to create a series set in The Forgotten Realms. This setting is iconic within the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game community and was previously featured in the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie and the popular video game Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios.
Deadline has described this potential adaptation by Netflix as one of the most significant investments in the fantasy genre to date. Crevello has already penned the pilot episode and will also serve as the showrunner. However, both Netflix and Hasbro have yet to make any official statements.
Nellie Andreeva of Deadline mentioned, “After protracted discussions, which are typical for a high-profile intellectual property, the fantasy series is now poised for further development at Netflix. If successful, it could potentially spawn a Dungeons & Dragons universe.”
While anticipation is high for this live-action series, there has been no update regarding a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Although the film is beloved by fans, it did not perform well financially for Paramount Pictures.
In November 2023, Chris Pine, who starred in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, expressed his desire to participate in a sequel and was “pretty confident” it would proceed, though no further information has been released since then.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has expressed willingness to pursue another Dungeons & Dragons film provided the sequel can be produced with a reduced budget. He stated, “We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less.”
Meanwhile, Amazon has included a Dungeons & Dragons animated feature in its Secret Level anthology series.
