Netflix Goes All-in on Catan, With Live-Action and Animated Films and TV Series Planned

Netflix Explores the World of Catan with New Productions

Netflix has announced its intent to develop a series of films and television series inspired by the internationally acclaimed board game, Catan. This game is celebrated globally for its engaging gameplay where participants play the role of settlers aiming to expand their territories through strategic building, trading, and resource management, encapsulated by its motto, “Trade. Build. Settle.”

As reported by Variety, Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to create content based on Catan. The entertainment giant is set to produce a variety of adaptations, including both live-action and animated formats, spanning films and several types of TV shows, both scripted and unscripted. Leading the production team are Darren Kyman from Asmodee, recently separated from Embracer, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studios, along with Guido and Benjamin Teuber, who are sons of Catan’s creator, Klaus Teuber.

Klaus Teuber first launched The Settlers of Catan in Germany back in 1995, which quickly escalated into one of the most successful board games worldwide, boasting sales of over 40 million copies. Klaus Teuber passed away at the age of 70 in 2023.

Guido and Benjamin Teuber, now co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, expressed their enthusiasm about the partnership with Netflix. They reminisced about their father’s vision from 30 years ago, which was to create a game that not only brought people together at the table but also fostered a sense of community through its interactive play. They see this new venture with Netflix as an extension of their father’s dream, bringing the spirit of Catan into new forms of storytelling that echo its themes of creativity, strategy, and human connection across a global platform.

While specific details and timelines for the Catan adaptations are still under wraps, the initiative indicates Netflix’s ongoing interest in leveraging popular board and video games for screen adaptations. This strategy follows their earlier acquisition of adaptation rights for Monopoly from Hasbro Entertainment earlier in the year, underlining their commitment to exploring the potential of game-based content.
