Disney+ Will Soon Feature AI-Generated User Content

Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, has announced that the entertainment giant’s streaming platform, Disney+, will soon support the creation and viewing of AI-generated content by its subscribers.

During a recent earnings call, Iger revealed plans for Disney+ to incorporate user-generated content, marking a significant shift for the platform. This update will allow fans to craft their own digital stories using well-known characters such as Darth Vader, Iron Man, and those from Frozen.

“This is arguably the largest and most crucial update to our product and technology since Disney+ was launched in 2019,” Iger commented, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While further specifics have yet to be disclosed, Iger hinted that Disney+ members will soon have the ability to create and share various forms of content, including short videos. He noted ongoing “productive conversations” with AI firms to ensure this new feature respects intellectual property rights while fostering creative freedom.

“Another exciting prospect with AI,” Iger added, “is enhancing the interactive experience on Disney+, enabling subscribers not just to view but also to create and share their own short-form content.”

The interest in AI-generated versions of popular characters surged last month with the release of OpenAI’s Sora 2, a generative video app that initially featured unauthorized versions of Disney characters, Pokémon, and other copyrighted figures. This led to a crackdown on such materials, particularly after viral instances of characters like Mario and Pikachu in scenarios trademarked by other companies.

While Nintendo has expressed intentions to protect its copyrights vigorously, Disney is taking a more open approach by allowing creations featuring characters like Anna and Elsa from Frozen, provided they are made by Disney+ subscribers within the platform’s official guidelines.

Additionally, Iger teased future enhancements to Disney+ that might include interactive, game-like features. This follows Disney’s substantial $1.5 billion collaboration with Epic Games, creators of Fortnite, which will integrate Disney-themed modes into the game and possibly allow users to develop games using Disney intellectual properties.
