Crystal Dynamics Lays Off 30 More Workers in Third Wave of Cuts This Year

Recent Staff Reductions at Crystal Dynamics

Today, Crystal Dynamics announced a reduction of 30 staff members, marking the third instance of layoffs within the company this year. The announcement was made through a LinkedIn post in which the company explained the layoffs as part of a strategic restructuring aimed at preparing for future projects.

In their message, Crystal Dynamics addressed their gaming community, stating, “As the realities of the industry continue to evolve, we’ve made these painful choices as a way to optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game, as well as shaping the rest of the studio to make new games for the future.”

Background on Recent Layoffs

Earlier this year, Crystal Dynamics faced a series of layoffs following the cancellation of the Perfect Dark project by Xbox, a game which Crystal Dynamics was involved in developing. Additionally, the company let go of 17 employees earlier in the year and 10 more in 2023, linked to significant restructuring efforts by its parent company, Embracer Group, which took ownership of Crystal Dynamics in 2022. At the time of acquisition, Crystal Dynamics employed 273 staff across its offices in Austin, Bellevue, and San Mateo, though current employee numbers are not disclosed.

Current and Upcoming Projects at Crystal Dynamics

Currently, Crystal Dynamics is known to be working on the Tomb Raider series, with Amazon Games slated as the publisher. This year, the company released remastered versions of Tomb Raider IV-VI, following last year’s release of the first three games in the Tomb Raider series and remasters of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2. The last original title produced by Crystal Dynamics was Marvel’s Avengers in 2020, which received mixed reviews.
