Significant Reductions at Microsoft’s Gaming Division

The recent announcement from Microsoft has revealed a substantial reduction in their workforce, affecting about 4%, or approximately 9,100 employees, as part of a broader initiative to streamline operations. With a global workforce exceeding 228,000, these cuts are part of a strategic alignment across the company.

In a communication to employees, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s gaming division, did not delve into specific details but indicated that team leaders would communicate any changes directly to their teams in the near future.

Spencer addressed all gaming division employees with a poignant message today:

Today, we are announcing decisions that will affect our colleagues across the company. To secure a sustainable future for our Gaming division and to concentrate on key growth areas, we will be reducing or terminating certain projects and aligning with Microsoft’s broader strategy to eliminate management layers to improve agility and efficiency. Out of respect for those affected today, we will withhold specific details and your team leaders will provide further information shortly.

I acknowledge that these adjustments occur during an unprecedented period of growth in player numbers, gaming hours, and product offerings. Our platform and product development strategies have never been more robust, and our current success is a testament to the difficult choices we’ve made in the past. Looking ahead, we must continue to make strategic decisions to ensure continued success, focusing on our most promising opportunities and maintaining the high standards expected of our business. This targeted approach will enable us to deliver superior games and player experiences for years to come.

While prioritizing our opportunities is crucial, it does not diminish the significance of the decisions at this moment. The contributions of those affected by these changes have been vital to our success, which is built on their creativity, energy, and dedication. Today’s decisions reflect strategic necessities, not the quality or dedication of our team members.

Our HR department is actively working with those impacted to offer severance packages that comply with local regulations, including compensation, health benefits, and support for job placement. We encourage those whose roles have been discontinued to apply for other positions within Microsoft Gaming, where their applications will be prioritized.

I am grateful to everyone who has contributed to shaping our culture, products, and community. We move forward with a profound appreciation and respect for everyone who has been part of this journey.

Phil

Since its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, Microsoft has significantly downsized its gaming sector. In January 2024 alone, 1,900 employees were laid off, followed by additional reductions including the closure of Redfall developer Arkane Austin and Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks. In September 2024, another 650 gaming positions were eliminated, and in May of the same year, a staggering 6,000 positions were cut, which constituted 3% of Microsoft’s entire workforce. The latest layoffs mark the fourth round of cuts within the gaming division in the past 18 months.

These layoffs occur just as Microsoft confirms its plans to launch next-generation Xbox consoles and maintains a significant presence at the popular video game expo, gamescom.
