The acclaimed series Shōgun, which has captivated audiences with its storytelling and won 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set for a comeback with its second season. Cosmo Jarvis, acclaimed for his portrayal of pilot John Blackthorn, is not only reprising his role in the upcoming season but also stepping up as a co-executive producer, as confirmed by an official announcement from FX.
Furthermore, Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, after initially joining the project when it was still considered a limited series, has been promoted to an executive producer. His promotion comes after his contributions to the production of the initial season. The production of Season 2 is scheduled to start in January 2026 in Vancouver, the same location where the original series was filmed.
FX has described the upcoming season as “a completely new and original continuation of the first season,” which itself was based on James Clavell’s novel bearing the same title. Regarding the narrative connection between the two seasons, the network elaborated:

“In the initial season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) was embroiled in a battle for survival as his adversaries in the Council of Regents conspired against him. The arrival of a mysterious European ship, stranded in a nearby village and piloted by the Englishman John Blackthorne (Jarvis), became a pivotal moment. Blackthorne divulged crucial military intelligence to Toranaga, shifting the balance of power and enabling him to triumph in a monumental civil war.”
“Set a decade after these events, the second part of Shōgun continues to explore the intertwined destinies of these two men from vastly different cultures.”
While we fervently hope for the release of new episodes by the end of 2026, all we can do for now is wait and anticipate the continuation of this riveting saga.
