Buffy Saint-Marie’s Order of Canada Designation Rescinded

Revocation of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Order of Canada

The honor previously bestowed upon Buffy Sainte-Marie as a member of the Order of Canada has been officially revoked. The Canada Gazette, which is the official newspaper of the Government of Canada, announced on February 8 that “The Order of Canada appointment of Buffy Sainte-Marie has been rescinded by an Ordinance signed by the Governor General on January 3, 2025.”

Sainte-Marie, who gained fame in the 1960s as a singer-songwriter and a pioneer in early electronic music, was initially appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997, and later elevated to the rank of Companion in 2017. However, her Indigenous identity came under scrutiny following a 2023 documentary series and investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC), which brought to light a birth certificate indicating that her biological parents were a white couple from Massachusetts. Sainte-Marie had previously stated that she was born on the Piapot First Nation reserve in Saskatchewan, Canada.

In defense, Sainte-Marie released several statements both in video and print. In November 2023, she expressed, “I have always struggled to answer questions about who I am. For decades, I have searched for my birth parents and my origins. Through my research, one thing became clear and I have always been transparent about this: I do not know where I am from or who my biological parents are, and I accept that I may never find out. Being questioned in this way is deeply hurtful for me, as well as for the two families I hold dear.”
