Tron: Catalyst Developer Bithell Games Makes 'Majority' of Its Full-Time Staff Redundant After Failing to Secure New Project

UK-based independent game studio Bithell Games has recently cut a significant number of its full-time employees, following the recent release of their time-loop action title, Tron: Catalyst. The reduction occurred as the studio struggled to secure a new major project.

This reduction affected 11 team members, as disclosed by Mike Bithell, the head of Bithell Games, in a statement he shared on social media today. The future direction of the studio now hangs in balance.

“As we approached the launch of our latest game, it became evident that we were facing the same financial struggles that many other game development teams are encountering as they look for funding partners for 2024 and 2025,” Bithell explained. He added that the studio had proactively addressed these issues, managing to arrange severance packages to help the affected employees transition smoothly.

Bithell Games had previously developed Tron: Identity, which combined elements of puzzle gameplay and visual novel storytelling. This project served as a demonstration of the studio’s capability to collaborate with Disney on their renowned sci-fi series.

The studio initially gained prominence with its tactical RPG, John Wick Hex, following its earlier successes with indie favorites like Thomas Was Alone and Volume.

Bithell praised his team, emphasizing their exceptional talent. “This was an extraordinary group of highly skilled individuals,” he said. “To any developers out there who are hiring, consider these talented individuals as assets to your team. We are ready to assist in connecting you with them.”

Bithell assured that the layoffs would not affect the availability or ongoing support of the studio’s existing self-published games. He expressed gratitude towards the studio’s audience and hoped they would continue to support the individual team members as they transition to new opportunities. “The identity of Bithell Games has always been shaped and enhanced by its people. Today, we find ourselves diminished,” he remarked poignantly.
