The "Tricky" BioShock Movie Is Not Dead, Brings On A New Writer

Continued Development of Netflix’s BioShock Film

The BioShock movie under Netflix’s banner is still a work in progress, as stated by director Francis Lawrence in a recent interview. He emphasized the complexity of adapting the game into a film, noting that achieving the right adaptation involves considerable time and effort.

In his discussion with IGN, Lawrence revealed that a fresh script draft was recently completed. This latest draft was penned by Justin Rhodes, known for his work on Terminator: Dark Fate and the video game anthology series Secret Level, with an earlier version crafted by Michael Green of Blade Runner 2049 fame. The director and Rhodes had a productive meeting on May 7 to discuss the project.

Lawrence described the adaptation process as challenging, pointing out that there are many elements that need careful consideration to ensure they are translated correctly from game to screen.

Changes at Netflix and Impact on the BioShock Project

Netflix has undergone significant leadership changes, which have affected various projects, including the BioShock film. Dan Lin succeeded Scott Stuber, bringing a new vision focused on enhancing quality. In light of these changes, producer Roy Lee mentioned in 2024 that the film’s direction had shifted to a more “personal” approach.

Despite these shifts, Lawrence remains optimistic about the state of the BioShock movie, expressing confidence in the current trajectory of the project.

Lawrence’s Busy Schedule and Future Projects

Francis Lawrence has a robust portfolio of directing credits, including several entries in the Hunger Games series, most recently The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. He is also involved with upcoming films such as Constantine 2 and I Am Legend 2. Given his busy schedule, there is no definitive timeline for when the BioShock movie will move forward.

Early Interest from Cast and Updates on the Game Series

The BioShock movie has already caught the attention of potential cast members. Jack Quaid, known for his role in The Boys, has expressed his enthusiasm for the franchise, citing its “rich lore” as a compelling reason to be part of the film.

Regarding the BioShock video game series, the next installment is being developed by 2K’s Cloud Chamber Studios. It’s still early in the development phase, and details are sparse, particularly with the absence of series creator Ken Levine.

Outlook on Video Game Adaptations

The entertainment industry has seen an increasing trend of adapting video games into movies. With numerous such adaptations in the pipeline, it remains to be seen how many will eventually be released to the public.

Overall, the development of the BioShock movie is progressing, albeit slowly, as the team strives to ensure that the final product faithfully represents the beloved game’s universe.
