Details Emerge About Netflix’s Upcoming BioShock Film
The film adaptation of BioShock, still in the works at Netflix, has had some new information come to light regarding its narrative foundation. Producer Roy Lee, in a recent discussion, disclosed that the film will draw from the first BioShock game launched in 2007.
“Netflix has instructed us to keep most details confidential,” Lee mentioned to The Direct, before verifying that the adaptation will indeed focus on the original game.
Directorial and Production Updates
Francis Lawrence, known for his work on The Hunger Games, has been confirmed as the director for the BioShock movie. According to Lee, Lawrence will undertake this project following his current directorial venture, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is actively being filmed in Spain and is slated for release in November 2026.
Lee also shared insights regarding the current status of the BioShock movie’s screenplay, noting that it is actively being written. Previously, it was reported that Michael Green of Blade Runner 2049 and Justin Rhodes of Terminator: Dark Fate had contributed to earlier drafts of the script.
Impact of Production Delays
Lee elaborated on how the delay in the BioShock movie’s production schedule, primarily due to the need for further script development, allowed Lawrence to direct another project in the meantime. The decision to take on Stephen King’s The Long Walk, set to release on September 12, was influenced by the postponement of the BioShock film.
Lawrence, who has committed to directing Sunrise on the Reaping as his next project, will only be able to start on the BioShock film after completing the Hunger Games installment. “It is all set for him to begin once Hunger Games wraps up,” Lee explained.

Changes in Production Scope
In 2024, Lee remarked that the production of the BioShock movie had been reconceptualized to focus on a more “personal” narrative approach, following a change in leadership at Netflix that emphasized quality over quantity and budget optimization.
Status of the BioShock Game Series
Regarding the video game side of BioShock, there are reports that a remake of the original game has been scrapped. Additionally, the next major installment in the series is still under development but has faced recent challenges, including layoffs at the developing studio.
