Doctor Who Disney Deal Collapses: Plans to ‘Marvel-ize’ Series Backfire

A recent analysis regarding the termination of Disney’s agreement with the BBC concerning Doctor Who suggests that a significant factor in the dissolution was the unsuccessful attempt to transform the franchise in a manner similar to Marvel.

This week, the BBC unveiled the future plans for Doctor Who, including a special Christmas episode for 2026 penned by Russell T Davies, along with the confirmation of an upcoming season. This news arrived concurrently with the announcement that the collaboration with Disney+ would not continue beyond two seasons and the forthcoming spinoff titled The War Between the Land and the Sea.

According to Deadline, the partnership with Disney unraveled due to concerns that Doctor Who did not expand its fanbase beyond its existing followers to captivate a broader American market. Additionally, the high production costs, which ranged from £6 million (approximately $8.5 million) to £8 million (approximately $10.5 million) per episode, contributing to a total deal value of up to £168 million (approximately $221 million), were among other issues cited.

“Early signs clearly showed that this partnership wasn’t built for the long haul,” a former Disney executive shared with Deadline. “It became evident quite soon that it wasn’t achieving the necessary performance on Disney+ to warrant continuation.” Another insider remarked, “The signs have been evident for a long time now. There’s been a noticeable lack of enthusiasm from Disney’s side.”

Both Disney, BBC Studios, and the BBC have refrained from commenting on these reports to Deadline.

Following a hiatus after the conclusion of Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor through a revised ending and the unexpected introduction of Billie Piper in a mysterious role, there were speculations about whether Russell T Davies would continue as showrunner. It has now been confirmed that he will return to write the 2026 Christmas special and possibly more. Amid critiques of recent series’ narratives and storylines, Doctor Who actor and writer Mark Gatiss indicated that perhaps the series could benefit from a break.

The War Between the Land and the Sea is set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year. Additionally, a new Doctor Who animated series aimed at younger viewers is currently in the works for CBeebies. The BBC has yet to announce a streaming partner for the global release of the Doctor Who Christmas 2026 special.
