Brutal BBC Parody of Its Own Recent Doctor Who Episodes Ridicules 'Lazily-Written' Scripts and Ncuti Gatwa Regenerating Into Billie Piper 'For Clicks'

The BBC recently aired a surprising satirical take on its own Doctor Who series, labeling it as “lazily-written sentimentalism” while also poking fun at the recent transformation of lead actor Ncuti Gatwa into Billie Piper, suggesting it was a move to boost viewership through sensationalism.

This parody was part of an episode of the BBC Radio 4 comedy show Dead Ringers, according to Screen Rant. The skit depicts Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor overcoming a CGI creature using what it calls “unearned sentimentality.”

This bold critique from the BBC on its premier sci-fi series—especially during a period of uncertainty about the show’s future—follows mixed reactions from the audience to recent episodes.

The sketch opens with a continuity announcer humorously remarking on the show’s survival: “It’s time for the last in the series of Doctor Who. It’s still going! Yes, I was surprised too.”

At present, there’s no official word from the BBC on when new episodes might begin production. This decision appears to hinge on whether Disney will renew its co-funding arrangement. With the recent season finale behind us and an animated offshoot on the horizon possibly without Disney’s participation, speculation grows that the partnership may not continue, leaving the BBC to look for alternative funding options.

As the parody progresses, Jon Culshaw’s impersonation of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor describes himself as “woke, touchy-feely,” and the script highlights the show’s diverse array of side characters.

Facing a CGI Monster, the villain in the skit, the Doctor’s response involves asking his companion to compliment him, which humorously leads to the monster’s demise from “cringe.”

“I can’t take the Hallmark card triteness of your empty platitudes!” cries the monster.

“It’s working!” the Doctor’s companion exclaims. “The script’s unearned sentimentality is its poison!”

In a final twist, the parody version of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor states he’s about to “regenerate into Billie Piper for clicks,” mocking the shock tactics used in the show.

Online reactions to the skit are divided, with some finding it tasteless and asserting that while the show’s narrative may be flawed, its inclusivity should not be mocked.

One viewer lamented, “A shame that this is not particularly funny but a pretty blatant breakdown of what has happened in at least the last two finales.”

“About 40% of that was genuine dialogue,” another added, hinting that the skit used actual lines from the show, penned by current showrunner Russell T Davies.

Many fans were stunned that the BBC would air such a self-critical parody, questioning whether it was wise to highlight perceived shortcomings in this way.

“It might be the only time I’ve heard something satirical be unfunny because it’s so accurate,” one fan commented, suggesting the parody merely described actual events rather than adding a humorous twist.

“This just seems lazy,” another fan expressed, while still acknowledging that the current state of Doctor Who might indeed merit some humorous critique.

“Piss poor comedy takedown of a now piss poor Doctor Who,” a fan concluded. “At least the BBC are consistent.”

Reportedly, the latest season finale of Doctor Who was marred by extensive reshoots, as confirmed by an actor’s social media post, allegedly due to Ncuti Gatwa’s decision to exit the series.
