Andrzej Sapkowski’s Regret Over “Witcher Schools” Mention
Andrzej Sapkowski, the author behind the celebrated Witcher series, has expressed regret over a brief mention of “Witcher schools” in his literature. This concept was later extensively elaborated upon by CD Projekt in their video game adaptations of his books.
In a detailed Q&A session on Reddit, Sapkowski addressed the fleeting reference to the “School of the Wolf” in his short story collection, “The Last Wish.” He described the mention as “unworthy” and is contemplating removing it from future editions of the book.
However, for numerous fans familiar with the Witcher through the video game series, the idea of Witcher schools has become a significant and beloved part of the lore. CD Projekt has creatively expanded on this concept, introducing at least seven distinct schools. These include the Schools of the Wolf, Cat, Griffin, Bear, Viper, Manticore, and Crane, each represented by unique medallions worn by their members. The revelation of a new school medallion in the teaser for “The Witcher 4” further fueled fan speculation, which was later confirmed to represent the School of the Lynx.
While the sorting of Witchers into distinct groups has been well-received in the gaming community, drawing comparisons to the house system in Harry Potter, Sapkowski himself does not endorse this expansion. He clarified that his original mention of the “School of the Wolf” was an unplanned inclusion that he deemed narratively inappropriate and ultimately unproductive to the storyline. As a result, he chose not to pursue this concept further in his subsequent writings.
Sapkowski lamented that this single line about the “School of the Wolf” was seized upon by game developers who have since elaborated extensively on the idea, creating a rich tapestry of Witcher schools that he found unnecessary. He shared his temptation to erase the reference entirely from his book to restore his original vision, though the lore established by CD Projekt would remain unaffected. Alternatively, he considered possibly expanding on the concept in future works to align it more closely with his vision, after fans suggested this approach.
Still undecided, Sapkowski mused about possibly removing the reference from “The Last Wish” or alternatively exploring the concept more deeply in future publications. He pondered whether to delve into the significance of Witcher medallions and their specific associations, indicating that the possibilities for future exploration in his universe are vast.
The discussion of these changes coincides with the English release of Sapkowski’s latest Witcher novel, “Crossroads of Ravens.” This standalone prequel, set decades before the events of the main saga and the games, follows a young Geralt as he embarks on his path as a Witcher.
Simultaneously, “The Witcher” series is set to launch its fourth season on Netflix soon, introducing a new actor, Liam Hemsworth, in the role of Geralt. This casting change has sparked significant online discourse, compelling Hemsworth to step back from social media due to the intensity of the reactions.
