Overwatch 2 Director Would "Love" To Do A TV Series

When Overwatch first launched in 2016, it not only introduced a vibrant selection of characters but also a rich backstory unveiled through animated shorts. This lore has expanded with the release of Overwatch 2 in 2022. Aaron Keller, the game’s director, has expressed ongoing interest in adapting the Overwatch universe into a television series.

During a recent conversation with GameSpot, Keller discussed the possibility of developing a comprehensive Overwatch narrative similar to successful Netflix series adaptations like Castlevania and Arcane. He expressed enthusiasm about the idea, saying, “The team would really appreciate seeing our universe in a format like that. We’re fans of those types of series and to see Overwatch take a similar path would be incredibly exciting. However, I’m not in a position to divulge any future plans at this time.”

Blizzard’s president, Johanna Faries, has also hinted at future adaptations of the company’s franchises. There were rumors in 2020 about an Overwatch animated series and a Diablo anime possibly being developed for Netflix. Unfortunately, these projects did not materialize, and Activision later filed a lawsuit against Netflix for allegedly poaching one of its executives.

Keller has recognized the need for more narrative elements within Overwatch 2 itself. He stated, “For us to truly say that Overwatch 2 is performing at its best, we need to reintegrate more of those narrative components.”

In related news, the 18th season of Overwatch 2 is set to launch today.
