After Years of Struggle, Blizzard Has Found Itself in Uncharted Territory: Overwatch Players Are Having Fun Again

After numerous challenges, Blizzard Entertainment is now experiencing a revival: Overwatch enthusiasts are once again enjoying the game.

The Overwatch team has had its share of setbacks. Its spectacular debut in 2016 was overshadowed by controversial game balancing, a problematic rollout of Overwatch 2, a barrage of negative feedback, and the scrapping of planned PvE features. With one issue leading to another, fans started doubting whether Blizzard could recover or if Overwatch’s peak had passed in 2018. However, with a slew of essential updates, fans now believe that Overwatch 2 is not only enjoying the best content roster in years but is also in its finest form ever.

Calling All Overwatch Operatives

On February 12, 2025, game director Aaron Keller called together the Overwatch team to present an Overwatch 2 Spotlight that promised a glimpse into the future. With a history of tough decisions behind them, the community was torn between apprehension and cautious hope, leaving little space for excitement at this critical juncture for Blizzard. What ensued was a 34-minute presentation detailing a content release roadmap, long-awaited changes, and crucially, a clear communication from the developers.

Previously marred by unrealistic promises, the 2025 vision for Overwatch 2 seemed achievable. New Damage and Support heroes, Freja and Aqua, were introduced, alongside Stadium, an innovative third-person Competitive mode designed to break the monotony of traditional gameplay. Loot boxes, a contentious monetization strategy abandoned when the original Overwatch closed in 2022, returned with improvements that made them more gratifying without direct monetary involvement. Each of the 43 characters received a set of four unique, impactful abilities, and plans were made to reintroduce 6v6 battles. This was a significant batch of real enhancements and more content than Overwatch players had seen since the introduction of Overwatch 2 – all set to roll out in the coming months.

By April, the implementation of loot boxes, Freja, Stadium, Classic balance modes, and more has signaled a new beginning for Overwatch. This shift is a welcome relief from the repetitive seasonal content releases and has surpassed the expectations of those who feared the hero shooter would never recover. There’s discussion on what instigated this dramatic strategic shift, but it’s clear that the team behind Overwatch 2 is committed to its success. We are witnessing a transformed Blizzard.

“They really pulled it together with this one,” a Reddit user Right_Entertainer324 commented about the Overwatch 2 Spotlight. “Super excited for the future of Overwatch 2, for the first time in… Well, ever.”

A New Era of Peace

It’s been about seven years since Overwatch was the behemoth that fans originally adored. Despite the flood of fulfilled promises in both Season 15 and Season 16, fans remain wary that a setback might be around the corner. Yet, Blizzard continues to push forward.

“Let’s be honest, (Overwatch 2’s) development history has been… troubled,” a popular post from Reddit user ImperialViking_ stated. “When PvE was cancelled we all thought it was the end. Now, come Season 15, Overwatch has turned the corner and the future looks extremely bright.”

They continued: “All in all I think it goes without saying that the devs have been outstanding recently. Calling them ‘lazy’ is simply incorrect. There will always be issues with (Overwatch), but the decisions of Aaron and the team have brought the game to a vibrant state of growth and competition. This certainly merits recognition.”

Across Reddit, Discord, X/Twitter – there’s been a noticeable shift in the atmosphere where discussions about Overwatch occur. Enthusiastic posts about Stadium are becoming more frequent, as are comments from players excited about Season 16’s introduction of Competitive hero bans. This highly requested feature, which debuted last week, gives players the control to exclude troublesome heroes like Sombra from their matches.

Blizzard is just beginning its journey to restore the trust it has lost over the years. Overwatch fans will not let it forget the past easily, but the change in approach is undeniable.

Content creator Niandra, whose “Let’s Talk About the State of Overwatch 2” video scrutinized the game in detail last summer, remains cautious yet optimistic about the current state. They believe the community is also warming up, thanks to several key additions.

“A particularly critical player base is somewhat to be expected with games that aim to be a part of your daily routine,” they explain, “but it seems the (Overwatch) community is gradually becoming more content.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if former Overwatch players have recently revisited the game out of curiosity.

“The introduction of perks, along with Stadium and Freja, has generated a lot of goodwill. Morale was quite low during the launch of Marvel Rivals and the subsequent month, especially since Overwatch didn’t immediately respond with major changes. In hindsight, that might have been the right decision, as Marvel Rivals is now facing its own challenges while Overwatch has rolled out significant updates. I wouldn’t be surprised if former Overwatch players are now giving the game another look.”

Stadium has quickly become a central part of Overwatch 2, but its significance extends beyond the novel gameplay it introduces to this nine-year-old hero shooter. As a radically different game mode, it has sparked constructive discussions among players about potential improvements. It will take time for the community to fully appreciate its value to the free-to-play experience, but for now, they are mostly just enjoying the experience.

One notable criticism has been the lack of a Quickplay option in Stadium, which also lacks crossplay support. This omission has prevented groups of friends on different platforms from experimenting with its various character builds and synergies. Most assumed that such a new mode would evolve to include more features in future seasons. That, coupled with Blizzard’s usual reticence to reveal future plans, is why it was surprising to see them address these concerns so promptly after they were raised.

“It’s so refreshing to see this,” one Reddit user remarked after Blizzard promised to address highly requested features like crossplay. “An IMMEDIATE update based on feedback they’ve received. They’re making no promises but are transparent about the feedback and their intentions. I really appreciate this new direction in community communication they’ve been pursuing for the last year.”

Is Overwatch Making a Comeback?

Overwatch has been an outlier in the gaming world for some time. A former powerhouse of the multiplayer scene, it has spent years exploring new depths of decline. The renewed enthusiasm and interest in its potential are not definitive proof that all issues have been resolved or that Overwatch 2 is now flawless, but they do indicate that it might be on the path to recovery.

While the momentum is present, many believe that one key move Blizzard could make to fully engage its community is the reintroduction of traditional story cinematics. These narrative elements were hugely popular upon their release but were largely abandoned as Blizzard focused on the game itself. Yet, considering they helped forge a connection between players and the characters they play, these videos are still among the most desired features fans hope will make a comeback.

“It feels like Overwatch has spent the last few years focusing primarily on the game itself, which has been great, don’t get me wrong, but it does mean that its reach outside the game is somewhat limited,” Niandra added. “Overwatch feels much like a very well-made PvP game, rather than the expansive multimedia franchise it could be, which is unfortunate given all the praise its world-building and lore have received over the years.”

Following Blizzard’s event in February, Overwatch has moved from being the most negatively reviewed Steam game of all time to receiving “Mixed” reactions from players. As the team continues to focus on additions like Stadium and the long-awaited return to 6v6, its ability to maintain consistency in the long term will be crucial in determining if Blizzard can regain all the ground it has lost. If the past few months are any indication, it’s entirely possible.

“I think we’ve entered a new golden age of Overwatch,” hero-shooter content creator and longtime Overwatch player Flats said during a recent livestream. “Overwatch is potentially in the best state it’s ever been, and it’s not even close. Better than the launch of Overwatch 2. Better than when the PvE missions ‘came out.’ Dare I say, better than Overwatch 1. The only time, maybe not, is 2016 hype when it first started – arguably.”

Overwatch 2 Season 16 launched the next phase of Blizzard’s grand plan last week. It introduced newcomer Freja as its latest Damage hero, with this week ushering in a mech-fueled Gundam collaboration. Future seasons are said to feature a Dva Mythic skin, a Reaper Mythic Weapon skin, additional Stadium characters, and more. Only time will tell if it’s enough to restore Overwatch to its former glory.
