New Tribute Album by Broken Social Scene
Broken Social Scene, the acclaimed collective, has revealed plans for a new tribute album dedicated to their influential 2003 album, You Forgot It in People. Scheduled for release on June 6 through Arts & Crafts, the album titled Anthems: A Celebration of Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It in People features reinterpretations of tracks from the original LP by more than a dozen artists. Among them are Toro y Moi, Mdou Moctar, the Weather Station, and others. The first release from this album is a collaborative cover of “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl” by Maggie Rogers and Sylvan Esso, available for listening below.
Maggie Rogers shared her personal connection to the song, stating, “‘Anthems’ was a pivotal song that reshaped my life. It taught me early in my career that music can serve as a meditative tool, thanks to its repetitive lyrics that act like a mantra. Broken Social Scene has always been a top favorite band of mine, and it was an absolute delight to work on this cover with my close friends Nick and Amelia from Sylvan Esso.”
Sylvan Esso expressed their pleasure in participating, noting, “It was wonderful to cover this beautiful track with Maggie. All of us have cherished this album since our younger years. Being invited to do this cover was truly an honor, and it brought us great joy.”
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of You Forgot It in People, Broken Social Scene recently performed the entire album during a North American tour. At one of these concerts, the performance featured surprise appearances by Meryl Streep and Tracey Ullman, who joined the band on stage in New York to perform “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.”
