Johnny Cage, a staple character of the Mortal Kombat video game series since its inception in the early 1990s, was notably missing from the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. His character was hinted at in the movie’s conclusion, sparking widespread speculation and a vigorous campaign by WWE’s The Miz to secure the role. However, it ultimately went to Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and Dredd.
The sequel boasts an impressive lineup including Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Returning cast members include Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, among others reprising their roles from the original movie.
Johnny Cage has long been a fan favorite, known for his sharp wit and superior fighting abilities. Since his debut, he has been depicted as an action star with real combat prowess, often called upon to defend EarthRealm against the threats from Outworld. NetherRealm Studios has consistently featured him in significant roles since the release of Mortal Kombat 9, and even a soft reboot in Mortal Kombat 1 did little to diminish his appeal.
Anticipation Builds for Mortal Kombat 2’s Release
Under the direction of Simon McQuoid, who returns from the first film, specifics about the plot of Mortal Kombat 2 remain under wraps. However, the release date has been set for October 24. The initial film was well-received, praised for its faithful adaptation of the video game, brutal battle scenes, and its ensemble cast, with Josh Lawson’s portrayal of Kano being particularly well-regarded.
Meanwhile, the original Mortal Kombat video game continues to excite players with new guest characters and recently introduced a mysterious fight featuring a whimsical nod to Pink Floyd.
