Carl Cox and his crew clashed with New Zealand club owner Neil Andrews and nearly cancelled a booking at his venue over a racist comment made on his personal Facebook page directed at Indians.
Two weeks ago, Andrews, the owner of ‘Famous Nightclub’ in Wellington, New Zealand, made a post to his Facebook page which caused a stir when a screenshot of the post was posted to Twitter. The natural reaction was one of scorn for what was seen as a racist depiction of Indians as being ‘creepy rapists’. Neil Andrews, who also DJ’s under the name DJ NDA, posted the following:
The incident then reached an even more significant level when Carl Cox and his management asked for the update to be removed and an apology to be issued before the superstar DJ/producer was scheduled to play at the club on January 17th. Although Carl Cox’s background is not exactly Indian, the prominent artist’s management still believed the post to be racially motivated and not the type of marketing you’d want in the run up to a show.
The update has ever since been deleted and has been passed off as a joke by Mr. Andrews and an additional offer to even host an Indian night with Indian DJ’s has been made. Neil Andrews also went on to say, “Yes, I am over the top in the way I do it at times, but it gets the issue and message out there. I certainly didn’t want to offend a whole race of human beings and for this I am extremely regretful”.
It has also been reported that the New Zealand dance music community is in a general state of disgust with Andrews and they even got a colleague of his to offer some additional information on the situation.
Further, although he apologized for the statement and said he went too far, Andrews still maintained that there is a problem with a minority of Indian men harassing women in more than just his own nightclub and feels free to speak how he desires on his personal Facebook page.
Regardless the update was horridly distasteful and a rather stale manner of shedding light on what could be a serious issue in New Zealand.
