'She Is a Pawn in the Middle of All of It' — Wicked: For Good Director Confirms You'll See More of Dorothy This Time Around, but Not Her Face

Dorothy Plays a Bigger, Yet Mysterious Role in “Wicked: For Good”

“Wicked: For Good” is set to showcase Dorothy more prominently than in the original Broadway production it’s based on. However, the character’s face will remain unseen throughout the movie. This creative choice was confirmed by director Jon M. Chu in a discussion with People magazine. He explained that Dorothy Gale will indeed have a more significant presence compared to the stage version, but her face will not be shown as the narrative primarily revolves around Elphaba and Glinda.

Chu emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the viewer’s imagination concerning Dorothy. “I wanted to respect the existing image of Dorothy that audiences might already have, regardless of their previous encounters with the story,” he remarked. According to him, the film continues to focus on the journey of Elphaba and Glinda, with Dorothy being a pivotal but secondary character.

The casting for Dorothy has sparked widespread curiosity, with names like Alisha Weir of “Abigail” fame and even pop sensation Taylor Swift floating around as potential candidates. Despite this, the first trailer of “Wicked: For Good” only shows Dorothy from behind, keeping her portrayal under wraps and adding to the speculation.

Judy Garland famously portrayed Dorothy in the iconic 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” The upcoming film “Wicked: For Good” offers an intriguing extension of this legacy. Here is the official description of the film:

Jon M. Chu, a celebrated director, returns to helm the final installment of the untold tales of Oz’s witches, featuring stars like the Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo and pop icon Ariana Grande. The story picks up with Elphaba and Glinda experiencing estrangement and the repercussions of their past decisions.

Elphaba, now vilified as the Wicked Witch of the West, hides away in the forests of Oz, continuing her advocacy for the oppressed Animals of Oz and striving to reveal the truths about The Wizard, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum.

Glinda transforms into a dazzling emblem of virtue, residing in the Emerald City’s palace and enjoying her newfound celebrity under the guidance of Madame Morrible, played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. As she prepares for her grand wedding to Prince Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, Glinda feels the weight of her separation from Elphaba and attempts to mend their fractured relationship, although her efforts are doomed to fail.

Their saga affects not only them but also Boq, played by Tony nominee Ethan Slater, and Fiyero, altering the course of their lives and endangering Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose, portrayed by Marissa Bode. Their world is further disrupted when a young girl from Kansas inadvertently becomes entangled in their conflicts.

As tensions escalate and an uprising forms against the Wicked Witch, Elphaba and Glinda must confront their differences and rediscover their bond to affect change in themselves and the land of Oz.

The film “Wicked: For Good” is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, promising to bring a dramatic conclusion to the beloved series and offering a fresh perspective on the classic tale.
