Introducing “The Phoenician Scheme” Starring Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton

In the newly released trailer for Wes Anderson’s film “The Phoenician Scheme,” Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton captivate audiences as a complex father-daughter pair. Del Toro embodies the role of Zsa-zsa Korda, a prominent business tycoon considered among Europe’s wealthiest. Threapleton shines as his daughter, Sister Liesel, a nun, with Michael Cera playing the role of her mentor, Bjorn Lund. The movie boasts a star-studded cast including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Shot in Germany, “The Phoenician Scheme” showcases the collaborative screenplay efforts of Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, set to the musical compositions of Alexandre Desplat.

Wes Anderson, whose recent projects include “Asteroid City” in 2023 and “The French Dispatch” in 2021, achieved his first Oscar win for the short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” in 2024. His unique and consistent visual style is recognized widely, yet Anderson himself claims to pay little attention to his personal style or voice while crafting a film. “I focus on what’s new for the movie, how to enhance its quality, and how to assemble the best team of collaborators,” he explains. Despite this, he notes that viewers frequently recognize his distinctive filmmaking signature immediately upon viewing his works.

Produced under American Empirical Pictures by Anderson, Jeremy Dawson, and John Peet, along with Steven Rales through Indian Paintbrush, “The Phoenician Scheme” is distributed by Focus Features, known for their previous work on Anderson’s “Asteroid City” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”

The film is set to premiere in a limited release on May 30, followed by a broader release on June 6.
