Major Update to Pokemon Legends: Z-A Enhances Accessibility of Mega Stones
The latest update to Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set to simplify the process of acquiring coveted Mega Stones from Ranked Battles, notably enhancing player rewards.
The Pokemon Company announced via an official statement that with the commencement of Season 2 in the online Ranked Battle mode, players will now be able to secure Greninjite at Rank Y and Delphoxite at Rank S. This is a change from Season 1, where achieving Rank K was necessary to obtain Greninjite, and Delphoxite was not available.
This adjustment addresses a significant concern within the community regarding the difficulty of obtaining these Mega Stones since their introduction. The game features the three original Kalos starter Pokemon—Fennekin, Froakie, and Chespin—early on, and all three can undergo new Mega Evolutions. However, these evolutions are exclusively unlockable through rewards from online Ranked Battles and are not accessible through the story campaign. This limitation has been a source of frustration for many players, particularly those who prefer to experience the game through its story mode rather than online play.
While the update does not allow for the acquisition of these items without participating in the online aspects of Z-A, it does significantly lower the barriers to obtaining them. In Season 2, players can earn a Greninjite after just a single Ranked Battle, even if they don’t win, since rank points can be accumulated through both actions taken in battle and victories. Moreover, efficient play can result in rapid ascension through multiple ranks, accelerating the journey from Rank Z to S to unlock Delphoxite. Game Freak has also revised the point distribution system to facilitate quicker rank advancement.
Future updates seem to promise continued improvements, with indications that Season 3 may introduce Chesnaughtite at a rank comparable to Rank S and potentially lower the rank required to obtain Delphoxite even further. The announcement also notes that “Mega Stones will continue to be reissued frequently in future seasons.”
This change is beneficial for players keen on collecting all the Mega Stones, as just a few Ranked Battles in Seasons 2 and 3 could yield all three stones with minimal effort, after which further participation in Ranked Battles is optional.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s second season is set to begin on Wednesday, November 5.
Having reviewed Pokemon Legends: Z-A, I assigned it a score of 8 out of 10, praising it as a significant achievement by Game Freak in the 3D era of Pokemon games. The game combines an engaging setting, a compelling storyline, and a completely revamped battle system that impressively enhances gameplay. It achieved remarkable sales, nearly reaching six million copies in its first week.
