Donkey Kong Prepares for Solo Silver Screen Debut
Prior to the enormous success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Universal Pictures and Illumination, there were whispers about potential films featuring other beloved Nintendo characters. It now appears that Donkey Kong is slated to be the star of his own movie.
Universal and Nintendo have recently made a joint copyright application for a project tentatively titled “untitled Donkey Kong motion picture,” as reported by IGN. This move is particularly notable given the historical legal clash between the two entities over whether Donkey Kong violated the trademark of King Kong. Ultimately, Nintendo triumphed in the lawsuit by proving through their legal counsel that Universal had previously claimed King Kong was in the public domain.
Years after settling their differences, Universal and Nintendo have successfully collaborated, with their first joint venture, the Mario Bros. film, amassing $1.361 billion globally. The next installment, reportedly named The Super Mario World Movie, is set to premiere on April 3, 2026. Additionally, Nintendo’s upcoming major Hollywood project, a live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, has been postponed to May 7, 2027.
In the 2023 Mario Bros. film, Seth Rogen lent his voice to Donkey Kong, portraying the character as a heroic sidekick to Mario, voiced by Chris Pratt. It is anticipated that Rogen will reprise his role in either the Mario Bros. sequel or the standalone Donkey Kong film, though official confirmation is pending.
Meanwhile, Donkey Kong is gearing up for his latest gaming adventure with a fresh look in Donkey Kong Bananza, set to release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17. This marks his first new game in 11 years. Additionally, the iconic Donkey Kong 64 is rumored to be among several games potentially coming to Nintendo Switch Online soon.
