Tom Cruise in ‘F1’ Over Brad Pitt Would’ve Been ‘Scaring Us More,’ Says Joseph Kosinski; Action Supervisor Quips: Tom ‘Terrifies Me’ and ‘We’d Have Had a Crash’

Imagine a scenario where Tom Cruise, not Brad Pitt, was the star of the forthcoming “F1” movie. This intriguing possibility was raised in a recent discussion with Joseph Kosinski, the director, and Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer, by GQ magazine. The duo began working on this racing themed film featuring Pitt while they were wrapping up the post-production for Cruise’s highly successful film “Top Gun: Maverick,” which amassed $1.4 billion at the box office.

Director and Producer Weigh In

Kosinski praised Tom Cruise’s dedication and skill, noting, “Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled.” He acknowledged that both actors possess a natural flair for driving. However, he admitted, “I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.”

As they transitioned from “Top Gun: Maverick” to “F1,” Kosinski and Bruckheimer brought along several crew members who had extensive experience working with Cruise, especially on the “Mission: Impossible” series. One such crew member, Graham Kelly, who specializes in action vehicles, concurred with Kosinski’s views on casting.

Crew Member Shares Insights

Kelly humorously remarked about the potential dangers of having Cruise lead “F1,” saying, “We’d have had a crash. Tom pushes it to the limit. I mean really to the limit. That terrifies me. Having worked with Tom on numerous ‘Mission: Impossible’ films, I can say it’s the most stressful job for someone like me who builds cars and coordinates stunts for him.” In contrast, he noted, “Brad listens and he knows his abilities, and I think he’d be the first to say, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to do that.’”

Interestingly, prior to “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski was developing a different racing movie, his own take on “Ford v Ferrari,” which initially had both Cruise and Pitt attached to star. Both actors were enthusiastic about performing their own driving stunts. However, the budget required for Kosinski’s vision was too high, preventing the project from moving forward. Ultimately, “Ford v Ferrari” was directed by James Mangold and starred Christian Bale and Matt Damon.

Current Projects and Future Releases

Currently, Cruise can be seen in theaters starring in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which has set a new opening box office record for the franchise, now in its 29th year, with a global debut of $200 million. Meanwhile, Pitt’s racing movie “F1” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27.
