In recent years, Formula One racing has seen a surge in popularity across the United States, a boost largely attributed to the Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive.” It was inevitable that the adrenaline-pumping sport would make its way to the silver screen. Earlier this year, the film industry embraced the sport with the release of “F1: The Movie,” a box office sensation featuring Brad Pitt. Fans of the movie can now look forward to its upcoming 4K steelbook Blu-ray release, priced at $38, which will be available starting October 7. Preorders for both the standard 4K and Blu-ray editions are also open.
F1: The Movie: A Thrilling Narrative
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on “Top Gun: Maverick,” “F1: The Movie” unravels the compelling story of Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver portrayed by Brad Pitt. Hayes, who left the racing world after a devastating crash in the ’90s, has since lived a life of a nomadic driver-for-hire. The plot thickens when Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, who is Hayes’ old F1 racing teammate, offers him a spot on his struggling F1 team. Hayes seizes this opportunity, driven by a personal challenge to prove he still has the competitive edge needed for top-level racing.
The narrative intensifies as the racing season nears its end, and Hayes discovers that the APXGP team is drowning in debt. Adding to the tension, the team’s rookie driver, Joshua Pearce (acted by Damson Idris), clashes with Hayes due to their differing attitudes and approaches to racing. The story follows their tumultuous relationship as they must collaborate to save the team from financial collapse.
Blockbuster Success and Authenticity
“F1: The Movie” not only captivated audiences worldwide, amassing an impressive $623 million at the global box office, but it also received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of the F1 environment. Filmed during the 2023 and 2024 F1 seasons, the movie features cameo appearances by real-life F1 legends such as Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton. The film’s realistic race scenes are further enhanced by commentary from F1 commentators Martin Brundle and David Croft, and shot on actual Grand Prix circuits.
Director Joseph Kosinski and cinematographer Claudio Miranda teamed up once again to deliver breathtaking visuals that offer audiences a driver’s seat view of the racing action. The movie’s intense and technically detailed scenes are perfectly complemented by a dramatic score from renowned composer Hans Zimmer.
