The second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” made its debut this past Sunday, attracting a record 8.2 million viewers, and featured a slew of new characters. Showrunner Craig Mazin expressed that while the new season would expand in scope, it also aims to preserve the intimate moments that defined parts of the sequel. A notable scene was the New Year’s Eve dance where Ellie and Dina shared their first kiss.
Exploring New Relationships
In the post-episode breakdown, Neil Druckmann, the creator and co-director of “The Last of Us,” delved into the dynamics between Dina and Ellie as they explore the beginnings of a potential romantic relationship. Druckmann described Dina as a character who captivates Ellie, highlighting that their relationship deepens beyond mere friendship and admiration into romantic affection. “Ellie is navigating these feelings with all the awkwardness typical of her teenage self,” he explained.
Adapting Iconic Game Moments
Craig Mazin shared with Variety his enthusiasm for bringing iconic moments from the game directly into the television series. He specifically mentioned a scene set in a church, describing it as a faithful reproduction of the game’s atmosphere, complete with dancing figures bathed in beautiful lighting.
Ellie’s Journey of Self-Discovery
Five years after the events of Season 1, Ellie, portrayed in her later teenage years, is depicted striving for independence and trying to define herself outside of her reliance on Joel. She finds solace and companionship in Dina, played by Isabela Merced. Their friendship gradually evolves into a more complex relationship, albeit complicated by a love triangle involving Dina’s intermittent boyfriend, Jesse, played by Young Mazino.
According to Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, her character initially believes Dina is heterosexual and committed to Jesse. This misperception feeds into Ellie’s fears of jeopardizing a valuable friendship. “There is a significant amount of self-preservation in Ellie’s hesitation, stemming from her uncertainty about Dina’s feelings,” Ramsey stated. Even as Dina makes a move during the dance, Ellie remains bewildered by the unfolding events.
The romantic moment is abruptly interrupted when Seth, portrayed by Robert John Burke, a bartender, showcases his prejudice. This is quickly followed by a violent disruption, prompting Joel to intervene instinctively to protect Ellie. However, Ellie firmly rejects Joel’s assistance, which only adds to the strain in their already tense relationship.
Meet the New Faces of Season 2
The second season introduces several new characters, enriching the storyline and expanding the world of “The Last of Us.” Viewers can look forward to exploring these new additions and seeing how they influence the journey of Ellie and other main characters.
