Introducing Spores in “The Last of Us” Series
In the universe of “The Last of Us,” infections are commonly spread through bites or cuts from the infected. However, in Episode 5, the series creators reintroduce spores as another method of transmission, significantly increasing the risk of infection. Neil Druckmann, the show’s creator, mentioned that introducing spores needed a compelling narrative reason, which becomes apparent with the episode’s dramatic conclusion.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2.
The recent trailer had already hinted at the arrival of spores, and the latest episode reveals their origin. In a thrilling sequence, Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) follows Nora (portrayed by Tati Gabrielle) into a spore-infested hospital basement, where the spores have thrived unchecked for years. Nora assumes Ellie will be infected too, but Ellie’s immunity quickly comes to light.
“While planning Season 1, Neil and I grappled with how to incorporate the concept of airborne spores,” showrunner Craig Mazin shared in a behind-the-scenes featurette. “We found it best to imagine these spores were confined underground in certain areas, not yet having breached the surface, and opted for a strategy of denial.”
The setting of the series does an excellent job of mirroring the game’s environment, complete with dense fungal growths and a palette of earth tones, alongside victims entwined in the fungal structures.

“These are individuals who have survived in this state for years, even decades,” Mazin explained, highlighting the depth of the series’ dramatic narrative.
In a poignant subplot, Elise (played by Hettiene Park) finds out her son, among others, has been infected due to the airborne spores. In a heart-wrenching decision, she seals her son and the others away, choosing the safety of the community over her child.
“This episode revisits the tough decisions characters face in the series. It’s about whether to save a loved one or sacrifice them for the greater good,” Druckmann points out. “This time, we see a choice that contrasts sharply with what Joel might have done.”
Mazin elaborates further on the nature of these infections: “These victims exist in a perpetual state of torment, inhaling air and exhaling spores, continuously spreading infection. Anyone else would have been infected like Nora, but Ellie is unique in her immunity.”
Initially, in the game, Ellie reveals her immunity to Dina through an encounter with spores. This was altered in the series; instead, Ellie’s immunity is demonstrated when she takes a bite intended for Dina during a subway chase in Episode 4.
New episodes of “The Last of Us” are broadcast on Sundays at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
