Nintendo and the animation studio Illumination are collaborating once again for a follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While details about the plot and characters are still under wraps, Craig Mazin, renowned for his work on The Last of Us, has voiced his opinion that Nick Offerman would be an excellent choice for the character of Wario in the upcoming film.
Mazin, in a discussion with IGN, praised Offerman, suggesting that he could bring a significant depth to the role. He highlighted Offerman’s performance as Bill in the first season of The Last of Us, which was a standout episode, as evidence of his acting prowess. Moreover, Mazin expressed his fondness for Wario, describing him as a “misunderstood” character.
Expanding the Mushroom Kingdom
The sequel, set for release in 2026, promises to broaden the scope of its predecessor, according to Keegan-Michael Key, who lent his voice to Toad in the first film. In an interview with Men’s Journal, Key shared that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will explore new locales within the intriguing lore of the Mushroom Kingdom and include a larger array of characters.
Key hinted at the inclusion of several “deep cuts” in the character lineup, possibly indicating the introduction of lesser-known figures from the extensive Mario universe. This suggests that fans can anticipate both familiar faces and new entries, potentially enriching the series’ narrative complexity and appeal.
Wario’s Anticipated Debut
Wario, despite being a popular figure within the Mario franchise, did not make an appearance in the first film. However, his potential involvement in the sequel has been a topic of speculation among fans, especially following a scene in the original movie that some believe depicted Wario indirectly.
In other Nintendo-related news, the company is also working with Sony on a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda, although this project is still in its early stages.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, was a commercial triumph, earning over $1.3 billion globally and securing its place as the second highest-grossing film of the year, just behind Barbie. It also ranks among the top 17 highest-grossing films of all time, a significant achievement that underscores the enduring popularity of the Mario franchise.
Upcoming Nintendo Events
Looking ahead, Nintendo has scheduled its next Nintendo Direct for March 27, with a subsequent event focused on the Switch 2 set for April 2. These events are eagerly anticipated by fans eager to learn more about the company’s future plans and upcoming game releases.
