This New Video Game Movie Adaptation Is An Extreme Surprise

It may come as a surprise to many that Ubisoft’s action-packed extreme sports video game, Riders Republic, is being adapted into a film. The game, known for its high-octane sports adventure, is set to make its cinematic debut with a prominent pair of directors at the helm.

Directorial Duo Takes the Lead

According to Deadline, the film will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, collectively known as Adil and Bilall. This duo has already made a mark in Hollywood with their recent projects including the last two movies in the Bad Boys series—Bad Boys for Life and the upcoming Bad Boys: Ride or Die. They also directed two episodes of the Ms. Marvel series on Disney+ and served as executive producers. Their involvement with the DC Universe includes directing the Batgirl film, which was ultimately shelipped by Warner Bros. despite nearing the end of production.

Ubisoft Confirms Film Project

Following the initial report by Deadline, Ubisoft has officially confirmed the development of the Riders Republic movie. The company promises that the movie will capture the essence of the game with “non-stop thrills, humor, and spectacular stunts” set against the picturesque backdrop of the Alps.

About Riders Republic

Riders Republic, a massively multiplayer online extreme sports game, was first announced in 2020 and released in late 2021. Developed by Ubisoft Annency, the studio that previously created Steep, the game offers an array of sports including biking, skiing, snowboarding, and wing suiting, with skateboarding added to the lineup in 2023.

Expanding the Video Game Movie Genre

The announcement of the Riders Republic movie adds to the growing list of video game adaptations. With over 40 such projects reportedly in development, the genre continues to expand. Alongside Adil and Bilall, Noé Debré, known for his work on Stillwater, is said to be attached to write the screenplay for the Riders Republic film. Ubisoft is also exploring film adaptations for other video game franchises such as Watch Dogs, Just Dance, and Rabbids, though it remains to be seen which of these will actually make it to production.
