Alan Cumming, set to return as Nightcrawler from the 2003 film X2: X-Men United in the new Avengers: Doomsday, recently hinted at a confrontation with Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic, a character making his first appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
“Just yesterday, I was training for a fight scene, and it’s funny because I’m 60 now. I first played this superhero 23 years ago, when I already felt a bit old for the role. And here I am, doing it all over again,” Cumming shared during an interview with Buzzfeed UK. “It’s quite comical, really. I’m learning these fight moves, and I’m asking, ‘Wait, who am I fighting?’ And they’re like, ‘You’re going to hit Pedro Pascal in the head,’ or something along those lines.”
This revelation has sparked widespread speculation among fans online about the implications for both characters in Doomsday. “Avengers vs X-Men vs Fantastic Four,” speculated a Redditor on a r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers post, envisioning a major clash. “It definitely seems plausible,” another chimed in. “The heroes can’t agree on how to halt the incursions, leading to a massive fight. The Fantastic Four are coming off a universe destroyed by an incursion, so they’re desperate to prevent another. The Leader has convinced Sam that heroes from other universes will do whatever it takes to save their own. And then you have the X-Men… Magneto is not about to tolerate any interference from universal invaders.”
However, not everyone is on board with this idea. Another commenter joked: “D-List Avengers versus the A-List X-Men from the original 2000s movies versus The Fantastic Four.”
Nevertheless, the sense of nostalgia is very much alive. “I’m still trying to process the fact that I’ll see the X-Men I grew up watching merge with this cinematic universe that I’ve adored into adulthood,” expressed another fan on Reddit.
Marvel enthusiasts are also pondering the potential dynamics of the battle, given the unique abilities of the characters involved. “The visual contrast between stretchy and teleporting powers could be fascinating,” noted one fan, while another expressed excitement: “The creative possibilities for a fight between a teleporter and a stretchy character are truly intriguing.”
The specifics of the plot in Doomsday remain tightly sealed, leaving fans guessing the context and significance of this particular fight. “Don’t get too hyped just yet. It might just be a brief moment in the backdrop of a major scene,” suggested one Redditor. “Still, I’m hopeful that every character gets a chance to shine in this film. It would be great if they moved past the usual nameless henchmen for everyone to battle,” they added.
Once more, the discussion veers towards the notorious tendency for MCU leaks by prominent actors. “It’s all about controlled leaks. Nothing excites the fans more than hints of one character battling another,” one commenter noted. Meanwhile, others humorously recalled past spoilers. “Fox didn’t have Marvel’s snipers back then. This guy is in for a surprise,” joked a user with a crying laughing emoji, as another added: “‘Hey Alan, someone named Kevin hired me to give you a heads-up.’”
Following Cumming’s remarks, a supposed leak from the Avengers: Doomsday set in April had already sent fans into a frenzy. This raises the question: Could Avengers: Doomsday essentially be an Avengers vs. X-Men film?
At the end of the day, the exact nature of the Nightcrawler versus Mister Fantastic battle, assuming it’s included in the final film, remains to be seen. Fortunately, Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on May 1, 2026, so answers are not too far off.
