This autumn, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series will unveil a new narrative arc titled “The Stage Is Set,” which is designed to welcome newcomers. The plot will focus on well-known figures like Shadow and incorporate elements such as the Chaos Emeralds, along with a newly introduced setting for the characters to venture into. The story arc begins in September.
The narrative will unfold over three issues, starting with Sonic the Hedgehog #81. The storyline kicks off with the disappearance of six out of the seven Chaos Emeralds, prompting Sonic and Tails to embark on a desperate quest for the last remaining emerald. Their search leads them to Sequin, a glamorous city currently celebrating a huge carnival. Soon, they find out that they are not the only ones after the elusive emerald; Shadow and Rouge are also on the trail of the same prize.
IDW’s announcement highlights that the series will continue featuring fan-favorite characters and introduces a “new, adorable, acrobatic, and seemingly innocuous character” suited to the carnival atmosphere of the city. The character, depicted as a harlequin jester, appears on the main and alternate covers of issue #81. Although this character is new to the comic series, IDW’s Sonic comics have previously influenced the Sonic video game universe. For instance, the mobile version of Sonic Forces incorporated two characters from the comics, Tangle and Whisper, in 2020.
