Passing of Renowned Voice Actor James Carter Cathcart

James Carter Cathcart, a distinguished voice actor known for his roles in the Pokémon anime series, including characters such as James, Meowth, Professor Oak, Gary Oak, among others, has passed away at the age of 71.

First reported by TMZ, it was confirmed that Cathcart died on Tuesday after a struggle with throat cancer, diagnosed earlier in 2023. Following his diagnosis, Cathcart made the decision to retire from his acting career within the same year.

Cathcart’s most notable contributions were to the Pokémon series. He initially provided the English voice for the character Gary Oak. His involvement grew as he voiced Fergus in “Pokemon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back,” and the character Snubbull in the short film “Pikachu’s Vacation.” Over the years, Cathcart expanded his role within the Pokémon universe, voicing Todd Snap in “Pokémon Snap” and later took over the roles of James, Meowth, and Professor Oak in the 2000s, roles that he continued until his retirement.

Beyond Pokémon, Cathcart’s voice graced many other series. He was the voice of Weevil Underwood in “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters,” and contributed to series such as “Kirby: Right Back at Ya!”, “One Piece,” and “Sonic X.” His talents were also present in the video game “Shadow the Hedgehog,” and he did voice work for numerous well-known commercial brands. Additionally, Cathcart was a dedicated musician and vocalist throughout his life.

Note: This article was updated post-publication to clarify that Cathcart was the original voice actor for the character Gary Oak.
