Monica Barbaro Joins Luca Guadagnino’s New Film “Artificial”
Academy Award-nominated actress Monica Barbaro has been confirmed to take a leading role in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming project “Artificial,” which is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
Barbaro’s involvement had been the subject of speculation, but with her contract now finalized, she is set to star alongside a notable ensemble including Andrew Garfield, Yura Borisov, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, and Cooper Koch. Discussions are still ongoing with Ike Barinholtz about potentially joining the cast.
Details on “Artificial”
“Artificial” is billed as a comedic drama that explores the realm of artificial intelligence. While specific plot details remain closely guarded, early indications suggest the storyline will revolve around the real-life tech company OpenAI. Particularly, it will dramatize the eventful period in 2023 when CEO Sam Altman was abruptly dismissed from his role and then reinstated shortly after. Andrew Garfield is tipped to play Altman, while Yura Borisov is expected to portray Iya Stuskever, a co-founder of OpenAI who was instrumental in the initial move to oust Altman.
The screenplay for “Artificial” is penned by Simon Rich, who is also on board as a producer. He is joined by producers from Heyday Films—David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford—as well as Jennifer Fox.
Earlier in the year, Barbaro captured attention with her Oscar-nominated performance as the iconic folk singer and activist Joan Baez in “A Complete Unknown.” This followed her widely acclaimed role as Phoenix, a fighter pilot in “Top Gun: Maverick.” She is also set to appear in Amazon MGM’s “Crime 101” alongside Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan, and will make her theatrical debut in the London National Theatre’s revival of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Barbaro is represented by UTA, Range Media Partners, Narrative, and Meyer & Downs.
“Artificial” represents another collaboration between Guadagnino and Amazon MGM, following their project “After the Hunt.” This drama features Julia Roberts, Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri and is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with a theatrical release scheduled for October 10. Guadagnino’s previous partnerships with the studio include the 2024 release “Challengers,” “Bones and All” from 2022, and “Suspiria” from 2018.
