The New York Film Festival has recently announced the addition of the biographical musical drama “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” featuring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, to its lineup.
Chosen for the Spotlight Gala, the film will be showcased on September 28 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The premiere will be attended by Bruce Springsteen himself, alongside White, Jeremy Strong, and Odessa Young, who are also part of the cast. The world premiere of “Deliver Me From Nowhere” will occur at a different location prior to this date.
Based on Warren Zanes’ biography, the film unfolds during a pivotal moment in the early 1980s, capturing Springsteen at a time of burgeoning fame. This period sees him simultaneously working on the personal, acoustic tracks for his 1982 album “Nebraska” and the demo recordings for “Born in the U.S.A.,” which would later propel him to international fame. Jeremy Strong plays Jon Landau, Springsteen’s manager and record producer, while Odessa Young portrays Springsteen’s romantic interest.
Director Scott Cooper expressed his deep connection with the New York Film Festival, describing it as a harmonious fit for the type of films he cherishes. “To bring a film about Bruce Springsteen to this venue is surreal. Diving deep into Springsteen’s life and artistry has profoundly shaped my own creative vision, and I am incredibly grateful to share this with New York’s audience,” Cooper stated.
Dennis Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, praised the movie as a compelling homage to the iconic musician.
Lim further remarked on the film’s unique approach, noting its raw intimacy and immediacy, which he believes sets it apart from typical biographical films. He credited this to the inspiration drawn from Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album.
The New York Film Festival is set to open on September 26 with Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt.” The festival will also feature Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” as its centerpiece, and conclude with Bradley Cooper’s comedic drama “Is This Thing On?” as the closing film.
Correction: It was previously incorrectly reported that “Deliver Me From Nowhere” would have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. The premiere will actually take place at another location prior to the festival.
