Warner Bros. and Legendary Gear Up for ‘A Minecraft Movie 2’
Warner Bros. along with Legendary Pictures has officially unveiled plans for ‘A Minecraft Movie 2’, setting its theatrical release for July 23, 2027. This release slot places it just a few months subsequent to the premiere of the live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ film.
Should the release schedule remain unchanged, ‘A Minecraft Movie 2’ will share its debut date with ‘The Simpsons Movie 2’, also poised for a July 2027 release.
The decision to produce a sequel comes as little surprise following the overwhelming success of the original ‘A Minecraft Movie’, which premiered in April 2025. The film garnered over $950 million globally, making it the second highest-earning video game-based movie ever, and ranks as the 69th highest-grossing film in cinema history.
Shortly after the release of the first movie, executives at Warner Bros. indicated that a sequel was almost guaranteed, pending finalization of the necessary agreements.

Jared Hess, who directed the original movie, is set to return as both director and co-writer for the sequel, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. It remains uncertain whether the original cast, which includes stars like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, will reprise their roles.
In an earlier discussion with Deadline, Hess expressed excitement about the potential for the sequel, citing the vast, unexplored possibilities within the ‘Minecraft’ universe. “There’s so much we haven’t yet explored that we’re eager to,” he stated. “Returning to this world will be incredibly enjoyable. The end credits of the first movie already hinted at what’s to come, and the fan response has been overwhelmingly positive.”
According to Hess, the sequel might explore the character Alex, introduced towards the end of the first film. Alex would likely join forces with Jack Black’s character, Steve, in the ensuing adventure.
Studio Leadership Developments
The announcement of ‘A Minecraft Movie 2’ arrives just after Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy secured extended contracts with the studio. Under their leadership in 2025, the studio released hits including ‘A Minecraft Movie’, ‘Sinners’, and ‘Weapons’. However, the year also saw some less successful releases like ‘Mickey 17’, ‘The Alto Knights’, and ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’.
