The live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon,” brought to life by Universal Studios and Dreamworks Animation, is set to soar into cinemas on Friday, June 13. This new rendition will reintroduce audiences to Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and the Viking community of Berk.
Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book from 2003, the story revolves around Hiccup, a young Viking with aspirations to emulate his father as a formidable dragon slayer. However, lacking the physical prowess to defeat a dragon, Hiccup instead relies on his ingenuity to create a net launcher that successfully traps a Night Fury, the rarest of all dragons in Berk. Upon encountering the injured dragon, Hiccup finds himself unable to kill it and instead chooses to befriend the creature, naming it Toothless. This decision marks a departure from everything his father taught him about dragons, as Hiccup opts to learn from Toothless to gain insights into the capabilities of dragons. Their growing friendship proves crucial when an ancient danger threatens both their worlds, with the bond they share becoming instrumental in uniting the two realms.
Below is the live-action cast of “How to Train Your Dragon”.
-
Mason Thames (Hiccup)
Portrayed by Mason Thames, Hiccup is the central character who yearns to continue his family’s legacy as dragon fighters. Despite being physically weaker than his peers, his intellectual prowess gives him an advantage. His life takes a turn when he captures the elusive Night Fury with his invention, leading to an unexpected friendship with the dragon. Thames is notably recognized for his role in “The Black Phone” and will appear in its upcoming sequel, “The Black Phone 2.”
-
Nico Parker (Astrid)
Nico Parker stars as Astrid, the top young dragon-fighter of Berk, known for her bravery and leadership skills among the Viking trainees. Initially, Astrid is annoyed by Hiccup’s ineptitude but grows curious about his sudden expertise in dragons, leading her to uncover his secret. Parker’s acting credits include roles in “The Last of Us” on HBO, “Dumbo,” “Suncoast,” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy.”
-
Toothless
Toothless represents a Night Fury, a type of dragon previously unseen by any Viking. After being inadvertently downed by Hiccup, he becomes the first Viking to interact closely with a Night Fury. The bond they form grows strong, with Toothless becoming a loyal and affectionate companion, thanks to his retractable teeth that earned him his name.
-
Gerard Butler (Stoick the Vast)
Gerard Butler returns as Stoick the Vast, the leader of the Viking clan and Hiccup’s father, in this adaptation. A staunch traditionalist and skilled dragon slayer, Stoick often feels embarrassed by his less robust son but still supports Hiccup’s endeavors to fit into their warrior society. Butler is also known for his roles in “The Phantom Of The Opera,” “300,” and “Den of Thieves.”
-
Nick Frost (Gobber the Belch)
Nick Frost takes on the role of Gobber the Belch, the one-handed blacksmith and dragon fighting coach of Berk, serving as a mentor to Hiccup. Renowned for his work in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, including “Shaun Of The Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “The World’s End,” Frost’s other projects include “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and “Doctor Who,” with an upcoming role as Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series.
-
Gabriel Howell (Snotlout)
Gabriel Howell portrays Snotlout, the boastful and flirtatious young Viking who vies for Astrid’s attention and enjoys ridiculing Hiccup. His overconfidence often leads to humorous situations, yet like Hiccup, he seeks his father’s approval. Howell is known for his performances in “Nightsleeper” and “Bodies.”
-
Julian Dennison (Fishlegs)
Julian Dennison plays Fishlegs, a young Viking whose deep knowledge of dragons compensates for his lack of fighting prowess. His expertise proves invaluable during battles, and he quickly becomes one of Hiccup’s trusted friends. Dennison’s notable film appearances include “Hunt For The Wilderpeople,” “Deadpool 2,” and “Y2K.”
-
Harry Trevaldwyn (Tuffnut)
Harry Trevaldwyn embodies Tuffnut, one half of the bickering twin duo including his sister Ruffnut. Their constant squabbles provide comic relief, and they both share a dragon by the film’s end. Trevaldwyn has been seen in “The Bubble” and “Ten Percent.”
-
Bronwyn James (Ruffnut)
Bronwyn James takes on the role of Ruffnut, the formidable and headstrong twin sister of Tuffnut and close friend of Astrid.
