Advancements in the ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Live-Action Movie
The development of the live-action film adaptation of Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering has recently made a significant leap forward. Screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, known for their work on the unreleased Hasbro Power Rangers movie, have been selected to pen the Magic: The Gathering screenplay.
According to Deadline, Matt Johnson, who directed BlackBerry, was in discussions to lead the direction of Magic: The Gathering. However, it is currently unclear whether he finalized his agreement with Legendary and Hasbro. Besides the shelved Power Rangers project, Gardner and Fitzgerald contributed to The Trench, a proposed DC Extended Universe movie that was to be an offshoot of Aquaman. The pair is also collaborating on Trancers, a new Prime Video series inspired by the iconic science fiction movie of the same title.
The Aspirations for a Magic: The Gathering Cinematic Universe
Magic: The Gathering has consistently ranked among the top trading card games for over thirty years. Wizards of the Coast, the game’s parent company, acquired the rights to Dungeons & Dragons prior to being purchased by Hasbro in 1999. Both Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary are planning to launch a film based on Magic: The Gathering that could potentially serve as the cornerstone for a broader cinematic universe, encompassing additional movies and television series.
Hasbro has also hinted at upcoming video game releases related to both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. The specific timelines for these projects have not been disclosed. Hasbro has been actively promoting Dungeons & Dragons as a multimedia brand, recently highlighted by the live-action film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Despite garnering favorable critiques, the film’s global earnings of $208.2 million were considered underwhelming, diminishing the prospects for a swift follow-up. Nonetheless, the movie performed markedly better after its transition to streaming platforms. Additionally, a dedicated live-action series is currently under development for Netflix.
Record-Breaking Success of the Latest Magic: The Gathering Set
In a recent release, Wizards of the Coast launched a Magic: The Gathering collaboration with Final Fantasy, which quickly became the franchise’s best-selling set ever. Interestingly, this collection of cards may have even revealed a long-standing mystery from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
