Oscar and Emmy Recipient Kieran Culkin Cast in “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”
Kieran Culkin, an actor acclaimed for his Oscar and Emmy wins, has been confirmed for the role of the charismatic Caesar Flickerman in “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” This role was famously portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the original series of films.
Culkin will star alongside a stellar ensemble that includes Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Lili Taylor as Mags, Ben Wang as Wyatt, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. Additionally, Molly McCann will appear as Louella, with Iona Bell playing her Capitol-designated double, Lou Lou.
Exploring the Early Days of Panem
The upcoming film delves into the history of Panem, set nearly 25 years prior to the original saga, which featured Woody Harrelson’s mentorship to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark. In this prequel, the focus shifts to Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Joseph Zada, capturing the crucial moments of the morning during the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, where he is thrust into the perilous competition.
Why Kieran Culkin is the Ideal Caesar Flickerman
Erin Westerman, co-president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, praised Kieran Culkin’s ability to captivate audiences, noting his perfect fit for the role of Caesar Flickerman, who is known for his engaging yet unsettling hosting of the Hunger Games. Westerman expressed confidence that Culkin would bring a fresh and unique take to the character, building on the memorable performance by Stanley Tucci.
Culkin’s casting comes at a peak time in his career, having recently won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in “A Real Pain” alongside Jesse Eisenberg, and securing an Emmy for his portrayal of Roman Roy in HBO’s “Succession.” Culkin is also making waves on Broadway, starring in the sold-out production of “Glengarry Glen Ross” with co-stars Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr.
Anticipated Release and High Expectations
The film adaptation of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence, who has directed several past installments starting with 2012’s “Catching Fire,” returns as director, with a screenplay by Billy Ray. Production will be handled by Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer. The franchise has already grossed over $3.3 billion globally across its five films.
Following its release, “Sunrise on the Reaping” achieved impressive sales, moving 1.5 million copies in its first week in markets including the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with U.S. sales alone doubling those of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and tripling those of “Mockingjay.”
Nina Jacobson, one of the producers, lauded Culkin’s dynamic presence and aptitude for making Caesar Flickerman a compelling watch, emphasizing his ability to blend charm with the darker undertones of the role.
The project is being managed by Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien at Lionsgate, with Phil Strina finalizing the studio negotiations. Kieran Culkin is represented by WME, Brookside Artist Management, and Relevant. His casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
